1. Trunk or treat: The city of Henderson plans the annual event from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road. Attendees can wear costumes and walk along the trick-or-treat trail in the parking lot, where cars will be decorated for Halloween. A costume contest and entertainment also are planned. 2. Henderson Bird Viewing Preserve: Visitors to the preserve during fall can see migratory waterfowl and returning shore birds. Fall migration also includes the possibility of seeing warblers, thrushes, flycatchers, sparrows and other passerine species. 3. Murder mystery: Theatre in the Valley plans to perform "A Party to Murder" at 8 p.m. Oct. 30 and 2 p.m. Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at 10 W. 4. Life in Death: Day of the Dead: The two-day festival marking El Dia de los Muertos, or the Day of the Dead, is planned for 5 p.m. Nov. 1 and 2 at the Winchester Cultural Center, 3130 McLeod Drive. The event will explore cultural traditions relating to the Mexican holiday and is set to feature ofrendas, or altars built by families and other groups in memory of deceased relatives and other beloved individuals, along with performances, Mexican crafts for sale and food. An outdoor collection of restored historic buildings on the 30-acre property includes a wedding chapel, print shop, railroad cottage and several homes all open for self-guided tours. Holiday Cactus Garden: Ethel M Chocolates, 2 Cactus Garden Drive, plans to turn on more than 600,000 lights on 300 species of plants beginning Nov 10. More than 70 percent of the lights this year will be LED, the business said. Residents can vote through Nov. 3 from one of three community hero finalists who will then flip the switch. Candidate nominations were due Oct. 27, and the winner is slated to be announced Nov. 6. The community hero honor recognizes philanthropic efforts, community service and other good works. Las Vegas 13 Club: Named for the 10-13 call for an officer who needs assistance, the 13 Club meets the last Thursday of most months (except November, when they meet the third Thursday) at 7 p.m. at O'Aces Sports Bar, 4955 S. Trunk-or-Treat: CenturyLink plans to host a free Trunk-or-Treat event from 5 to 9 p.m. Oct. 30 in its parking lot at 3436 Aldebaran Ave. Family-friendly activities planned include multiple bounce houses, carnival games, costumed characters, a petting zoo, a photo booth and a Major League Baseball batting game. Vehicles from community organizations will be onsite along with dozens of community partners with decorated car trunks filled with treats for families. Snacks will be available for purchase, and there will be booths showcasing local businesses. All proceeds will benefit United Way of Southern Nevada.

The Last Nevada Day Open House: The event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 at The Hammargren Home of Nevada History, 4318 Ridgecrest Drive. This will be the 20th time former Lt. Gov. and neurosurgeon Lonnie Hammargren has opened his house to celebrate Nevada Day. It is also one of several recent ones to be called the last. The home is actually three homes connected by bridges, tunnels and bric-a-brac, and the tour features the eclectic mix of historical and unusual objects he has collected over the years. Downtown Container celebrates Nevada Day and Halloween: The event is set to begin with a pumpkin patch, where kids can create their own jack-o-lanterns, and face painters and balloon artists at 2 p.m. Oct. 30 at Downtown Container Park, 707 Fremont St. The first 250 children are set to receive a free trick-or-treating bag and glow sticks. A screening of "Monsters Inc." is scheduled at 6 p.m. The following day, the park's all-day Halloween party including games on the lawn, stories from The Writer's Block, a pumpkin decoration area, face painters, a petting zoo and trick-or-treating safety tips provided by the Metropolitan Police Department is scheduled to begin with a Zombie Zumbathon benefiting the American Red Cross and Celiac Disease Foundation at 11 a.m. Oct. 31. Barnyard in the Boneyard: The Neon Museum is set to partner with Horses4Heroes to host the event in its North Gallery from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 31 at 770 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Sponsored by American Fence Company and Current Events, Horses4Heroes will provide a petting zoo for families and children. The cost is $5 per person for adults and children ages 2 or older. The Farm Fall Festival: Barn Buddies Rescue @ The Farm is planning its Fall Festival from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Oct. 31 at The Farm, 7222 W. Grand Teton Drive. Squash and pumpkins, rescued animals, a farm train, pony rides, a toddler maze and a hay wagon are planned. Oakey Blvd. Nov. 1 is set to feature a Day of the Dead theme. Admission is $11.99 for adults and $9.99 for children. Ride wristbands are $12, or individual ride tickets are $3. Bonnie Screams: Haunted attractions are set to take over Bonnie Springs Ranch, 16395 Bonnie Springs Road, from 7 p.m. to midnight daily through Oct. 31. Attractions include a zombie quarantine area, the No Hope Hospital, the Zombie Clown Circus, haunted trails and a haunted train ride. Magician Dixie Dooley is set to perform nightly. "Breathe Onto the Mirror": The exhibit by Jacqueline Ehlis is planned to run through Nov. 8 at The Studio at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave. Ehlis is the chairwoman of the art department at Portland Community College, and her work incorporates the interaction of color, light and reflection, reminding the viewer that they are the vehicle that interprets and is part of the works through their reflection in the mirrors. "It Happened Like This": The free annual exhibition of mostly local artists, including Richard Hooker, Kim Johnson and C.A.
