North Las Vegas City Manager Tim Hacker looked to quiet whispers July 23 surrounding his rumored departure, explaining that he’s “not looking for employment” outside City Hall.
“I’m as committed today as I was when I started,” he said, “if not more so, because there’s a lot more work to do today.
“I just question the intent of these rumors. We don’t have to look far to find those that may want to unsettle current discussions with our bargaining groups.”
Hacker, who has helped preside over two years of North Las Vegas’ steep post-recession slide, reportedly has reached out to multiple area municipalities in search of a new job.
Multiple sources claim the city manager has been shopping resumes around the valley for at least a week.
That is in part, they suspect, because of former Mayor Shari Buck’s departure last month.
“Basically, what I heard is that he was looking around to see if anyone had a place for him,” said one city staffer. “My personal view, knowing he worked closely with Mayor Buck, is that maybe it would be difficult for someone to work that closely and that well with (a new mayor) who has such a different style.”
Hacker has faced a torrent of union criticism in the wake of public safety employee pay freezes meant to avert a $33 million city-declared “fiscal emergency” last July. North Las Vegas Police Supervisors Association President Leonard Cardinale — who recently filed a retaliation lawsuit against the city, its police chief and Hacker — was one of those who called the city manager’s support for forced concessions union busting.
Today, he hopes Hacker is not on the way out.
“If it’s true that he’s leaving, that would be very disappointing because it just shows us he’s never been invested,” Cardinale said. “It just shows us that all he did was come in here for two years of union busting and then got out of town.
“At that point we’d hope (Mayor) John Lee could find someone a little more user-friendly. I’m confident he can.”
