MAGNET SCHOOLS AND CAREER AND TECHNICAL ACADEMIES FAIR PLANNED NOV. 23

The Clark County School District plans a Magnet and Career and Technical Academies fair from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 23 at the Galleria at Sunset, 1300 W. Sunset Road, in Henderson. The event is free and open to the public.

The district also plans a parent information night from 5 to 7 p.m. Dec. 12 at the Pearson Community Center, 1625 W. Carey Ave., in North Las Vegas.

GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BENEFIT AT-RISK LAS VEGAS SCHOOLS

The inaugural Sammy Davis Jr. Charity Golf Tournament is scheduled at 11 a.m. Dec. 7 at Las Vegas National Golf Club, 1911 E. Desert Inn Road. The tournament will fundraise for Communities in Schools of Nevada, a dropout prevention nonprofit organization operating at more than 40 schools in Southern Nevada.

Registration is $150 for a single, $280 for a twosome or $525 for a foursome. The format is a four-man scramble. Registration is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. with an awards banquet to follow the tournament at 3:30 p.m. Tee and raffle prizes will also be awarded.

VIRTUAL HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS COMPUTER DRIVE

The Clark County School District plans a Laptops for Learning drive through Dec. 31 to benefit Virtual High School students who can’t afford computers. Virtual High School allows students to take online classes.

The school, 3050 E. Flamingo Road, will accept computers in good, working condition. Data will be wiped clean by U.S. Micro Corp.

TECHNOLOGY GRANTS AVAILABLE TO TEACHERS

CenturyLink is offering $35,000 in education grants through the CenturyLink Clarke M. Williams Foundation’s Teachers and Technology grant program. Applications are open to all Southern Nevada teachers working in public or private schools who are “looking to innovatively implement technology in their classrooms to increase student achievement,” according to CenturyLink.

The application deadline is Jan. 10; grants will be presented in April 2014. The number of grants awarded will depend on the applications, which are to be reviewed by a panel of local technology professionals.

COLLEGE OF SOUTHERN NEVADA INTRODUCES SMARTPHONE APP

The College of Southern Nevada introduced a new smartphone app that allows students to register for classes for the spring 2014 semester. CSN Mobile is free and available in the iTunes Store and Google Play.

Users, including nonstudents, can also search for campus phone numbers, access an interactive campus map, communicate with professors and more.

SCHOOL DISTRICT HOSTS PHOTO CONTEST

The Clark County School District is accepting submissions through Nov. 22 for its 2013 Middle School Electronic Photo Contest. For the first time, the district is also accepting entries for an elementary student division.

Categories include: Use Your Imagination; Animals; Where Have You Been?; and Humorous. A judge will select the best images which will be posted online for CCSD students, teachers and staff to vote on. Winners will be notified by Dec. 3 and acknowledged at the Dec. 12 Board of Trustees meeting at the Edward A. Greer Education Center, 2832 E. Flamingo Road.
