GUIDANCE CENTERS PLAN WALKING GROUPS

Humana Guidance Centers are offering free walking groups led by a certified personal trainer. The program aims to positively affect seniors’ health.

Participants will receive a free pedometer and at the end of each outing can upload their steps at a Guidance Center computer kiosk or at home to tracks steps taken, distance and calories burned.

In Summerlin, the walking group is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays. Locations vary. For more information, call the Summerlin Guidance Center at 702-380-6170.

LEISURE CONNECTION SOCIAL GROUP OUTINGS PLANNED EACH MONTH

Leisure Connection for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is a social group planned each month.

The outings are geared to assist high-functioning adults with social skills and independence in the community. Activities include bowling, movies, lunch/dinner, sports events and leisure education classes.

RAINBOW YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE SIGN-UPS UNDER WAY

Rainbow Youth Soccer League sign-ups are planned from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 11, 13, 20 and 27 at Villa Pizza, 3385 S. Durango Drive. The cost to sign up is $120. The league office is at 9360 W. Flamingo Road.

NONPROFIT PLANS MOUNTAIN GETAWAY
FOR DISADVANTAGED YOUTHS, ADULTS

The nonprofit Torino Foundation invites hundreds of disadvantaged children each summer to its Torino Ranch, where kids can experience summer camp through specialized programs under medical supervision, ensuring that each person gets the chance to have fun and make friends while gaining lifelong memories. Torino Foundation now offers camp experiences to teens and adults who were not able to have the chance in their youth. Every camp is residential, coed and free to the participants.

The camps planned for 2013 are:

n Camp Imagine: July 5-7: a camp that provides children and adults (8 or older) who are blind or visually impaired with a natural and private environment to develop self-esteem, build independence and fully experience the joys of the outdoors.

n Camp Heart & Sole: July 11-14: a camp designed for children ages 6 to 17 who are at risk of developing heart problems and would benefit from connecting with other young people who may share similar health, emotional and physical challenges.

n Camp Cartwheel: July 17-20 (session 1) July 24-27 (session 2): an outdoor four-night camp experience designed to help children ages 5 to 17 with cancer or other critical illnesses as well as their siblings overcome the physical, mental and emotional obstacles posed by childhood disease.

n Camp TLC: Aug. 1-4: A residential summer camp program designed specifically for children ages 6 to 17 with a primary diagnosis of autism.

n Camp Some More: Aug. 9-11: a camp designed for the mothers and children of The Shade Tree, an organization helping those affected by domestic violence.

MUSCULAR DYSTROPHY ASSOCIATION SEEKING VOLUNTEERS

The Muscular Dystrophy Association is looking for volunteer counselors and medical professionals to care for youngsters with muscular dystrophy and related diseases at the Southern Nevada MDA Summer Camp, from Aug. 4-10 at Apple Canyon Center in Mountain Center, Calif.

Volunteer counselors must be at least 16 years old. Campers’ ages range from 6 to 17. Each counselor is a companion to an MDA camper, helping with camp activities (sports, horseback riding, arts and crafts, etc.) and day-to-day activities (eating, bathing and dressing).

The association also is seeking physicians, nurses, emergency medical technicians, physical therapists and other medical professionals to volunteer for the camp’s medical staff. Medical staff members supervise and maintain the health and well-being of all camp participants.

SIGN UP FOR SUMMER CAMPS

The city of Las Vegas invites parents to enroll children in summer day camp programs at six area community centers. Open registration is ongoing at several locations until the camps are full.

Registration must be done in person. All locations will have limited enrollment. Contact each location for details.

Summer camps are scheduled for 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday. There will be no camp July 4.

Age-appropriate activities, including field trips, sports, special events, physical fitness and games, arts and crafts and nutrition training are planned under the supervision of trained staff members.

The following locations will offer summer camps, priced at $75 per child for the week and $70 for additional children in the family:

n Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road, 702-229-1607, ages 6 to 11. Camp ends Aug. 23.

n Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St., 702-229-6374, ages 6 to 15. Camp ends Aug. 16.

n East Las Vegas Community Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave., 702-229-1515, ages 6 to 15. Camp ends Aug. 16.

n Stupak Community Center, 251 W. Boston Ave., 702-229-2488, ages 6 to 15. Camp ends Aug. 16.

Two community centers plan to offer themed weeklong specialty camps with additional activities, cooking and/or field trips. The cost will be $115 per child for the week and $110 for additional children, for most camps. A few specialty camps have higher prices. A separate Lorenzi Adaptive summer program for participants 7 to 22 with disabilities is slated to be offered from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, through Aug. 16, only at the East Las Vegas Community Center. Participants will enjoy a new recreation experience every week, community outings, sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming and movies. SHRINERS golf tournament
PLANNED FOR OCTOBER AT TPC summerlin

The 2013 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open golf tournament is planned for Oct. 14-20 at TPC Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Circle. The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is an official PGA Tour event. The 2013 tournament is set to feature more than 130 PGA Tour professionals competing for a $6 million purse, with a winner’s share of $1,080,000. All proceeds will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The event’s fourth annual Women’s Day luncheon, Kick Off Your Heels, is planned for Oct. 15. It will be catered and feature a guest speaker. Tickets are $125 per guest. The luncheon sold out in 2012, so early purchases are encouraged.

The North Las Vegas recreation division’s activity schedule of classes, sports and recreation programs is available.

Registration can be conducted online at cityofnorthlasvegas.com or in person at the Silver Mesa Recreation Center, 4025 Allen Lane, and the Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St. A list of offerings is available on the website.

The city’s recreation division offers a variety of affordable activities for adults and children, including personal training at the gym, adult and child dance classes, gymnastics, ceramics and martial arts.

Each of the programs encourages healthy exercise and social activities.

NEW A.G.E. EVENTS FOR THOSE
WITH DISABILITIES PLANNED

New A.G.E. for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is set from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive. The program offers a variety of activities and special events that promote individuality, self-esteem and independence. The cost is $21 for one to three days, $28 for four days and $35 for five days each week.

SUMMER RECREATION EVENTS OPEN
FOR YOUTHS AND TEENS

The Dula Gym’s Summer Open Recreation for youths and teens ages 10-18 is set to be open noon to 3 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays at 441 E. Bonanza Road. Youths can attend Fridays and Saturdays when the gym is available. The recreation periods include open gym and weekly competitions in games and sports and are free with RecPass for participants 18 or younger with parent/guardian approval.

Youth sports skills events for ages 4-10 are planned for June at the Dula Gym, 441 E. Bonanza Road. The schedule of events is:

n T-shirt basketball for ages 4-6, 10 a.m. Saturdays

n T-shirt soccer for ages 4-6, noon Saturdays

The cost is $15 per youth. Advance registration is required. One hour of sports skills and drills, conditioning, footwork, team building, passing, dribbling and offensive/defensive tactics is planned for each class.

The Lorenzi Adaptive Recreation Program for those ages 7 to 21 with disabilities is set from 1 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. Participants can enjoy a new recreation experience every week, community outings, sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming and movies. The cost is $27 for one to three days, $36 for four days and $45 for five days, per person.

GOLF SUMMERLIN PLANNING
JULY 4 BARBECUE

Golf Summerlin is planning a barbecue lunch and special twilight pricing at all three of its courses: Highland Falls, 10201 Sun City Blvd.; Palm Valley, 9201 Del Webb Blvd.; and Eagle Crest, 2203 Thomas W. Ryan Blvd. Las Vegas residents and visitors can take advantage of this special.

On July 4, golfers can play at Highland Falls or Palm Valley for $35 and at Eagle Crest for $25 and receive a complimentary barbecue lunch special. The lunch will include a hamburger or hotdog, chips and a drink.

Golf Summerlin is to offer special twilight pricing July 5-7. Until 11 a.m., loyalty members may play at Highland Falls and Palm Valley for $30. Rounds after 11 a.m. are $20. At Eagle Crest, loyalty members may tee off before 11 a.m. for $20 or enjoy rounds after 11 a.m. for $15.
