Record-breaking heat continues in Las Vegas Valley
July 28, 2016 - 7:01 pm
Following a pair of record-breaking temperatures Thursday, an excessive heat warning for the Las Vegas valley remains in effect Friday.
The high temperature reached 115 degrees, breaking the 1995 record of 114 degrees. Thursday’s overnight low temperature also reached a record-breaking 91 degrees, breaking the previous low-high record of 90 degrees for the date, set in 2009, the weather service said.
The warning is in effect until 8 p.m. Friday, according to the National Weather Service.
The weather service also issued a severe thunderstorm warning for Henderson and Boulder City Thursday night.
Winds in the valley will be affected by the storms on the edge of the city, and speeds are expected to be about 10 mph Thursday, meteorologist Chad Shafer said. “The winds could be doing squirrelly things (Thursday) evening,” Shafer said.
After Thursday, temperatures are expected to drop this weekend, with an expected high of 112 degrees Friday, 106 on Saturday and 102 on Sunday, National Weather Service meteorologist John Adair said.
Monday’s high should be 101 degrees, and Tuesday and Wednesday’s forecasts call for highs of 103 degrees, he said.
Thunderstorms are possible around the outskirts of the valley through the weekend and into next week.
Las Vegas can expect a 20 percent to 30 percent chance of rain each day from Saturday to Tuesday, the weather service said.
