Las Vegas marshals propose budget fix, but city says it’s not enough

Las Vegas’ city marshals have come up with a way to almost meet the budget cuts asked for by the city’s leadership — provided that the savings be used to prevent all of the proposed layoffs within the marshals’ ranks. The city issued a statement Wednesday night indicating that the marshals’ proposal wasn’t acceptable.

Fire captain will face more charges in sex sting

Federal authorities announced today that the Clark County Fire Department captain nabbed in a Henderson police operation will face additional charges. Martin Vohwinkel, 55, will face a charge of coercion and enticement of a minor for sex, a felony that carries a penalty of 10 years to life in prison.

Gibbons proposing big changes in higher education system

Gov. Jim Gibbons is scheduled to announce Thursday that he will back changes in state law that higher education leaders have supported for decades, including allowing the higher education system to keep all in-state tuition funds and giving greater autonomy to the Board of Regents.

‘Miracle on the Hudson’ pilot Sullenberger retires

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger has flown his final flight. The pilot who landed a US Airways plane safely on the Hudson River last January said Wednesday he is retiring after 30 years and plans to spend some of his time pressing for more flight safety. Sullenberger officially retired at a private ceremony in Charlotte with fellow pilots and other US Airways employees.

Fate of UNR’s fire academy remains in limbo

ELKO — Sharing University of Nevada, Reno’s Fire Science Academy with the National Guard is the only viable solution to keeping the academy open, said former U.S. Sen. Richard Bryan. Bryan is chairman of a task force created last year to look for ways to keep the training site in northeast Nevada operating.

Hearing set for man accused in ax attacks

The man accused of using an ax to kill a baby and severely injure the boy’s mother and a disabled sister-in-law last month faces a preliminary hearing April 12 to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to try him on a charge of murder and three counts of attempted murder.
