Don’t call Social Security and Medicare part of the welfare state
In his Tuesday primer on federal spending and the budget, Robert Samuelson asserts, “There has been a vast reordering … away from defense and toward the welfare state.” I feel compelled to tell Mr. Samuelson that Social Security and Medicare are not welfare. I and many of my fellow workers have been forced to pay for it throughout our careers.
