Henderson teen emotionless at first court appearance for double homicide

Adrian Navarro-Canales, 16, stood emotionless at his first court appearance for two murder charges Monday at the Henderson Justice Court.

Henderson police discovered his mother, 40-year-old Elvira Canales-Gomez, and his 9-year-old brother, Cesar Navarro, stabbed to death in their apartment near the 11000 block of S. Eastern Ave. near Sunridge Heights Parkway on Sept. 20.

Navarro-Canales was arrested Sept. 25 after police received an anonymous tip to his whereabouts and was booked into the juvenile holding area of the Clark County Detention Center, but he is being charged as an adult.

Police initially thought Navarro-Canales was a victim. However, he was identified as a suspect, and a warrant was issued for his arrest Sept. 22.

Justice of the Peace David S. Gibson Sr. set the next appearance for 9:30 a.m. Oct. 30.

Defense attorney Joe Abood declined to comment.
