Man faces multiple charges after home invasion spree, getaway car crash in west valley

After a man invaded a west valley home, stole a getaway car, crashed it into a second home’s brick dividing wall and then invaded another west valley home Thursday night, the suspect is facing several charges at the Clark County Detention Center.

Joshua Chavira, 33, was arrested late Thursday after a robbery spree detailed in his arrest report, which the Las Vegas Review-Journal obtained Tuesday. He faces two counts of burglary and one count each of burglary with a deadly weapon, robbery with a deadly weapon, home invasion with a deadly weapon, grand larceny of an automobile and attempted grand larceny of an automobile.

The spree started about 9:15 p.m. at a home on the 10200 block of Hawk Bay Place, inside the Talon Pointe subdivision near Town Center and Anasazi drives. One man was home, inside his room, when he heard a noise — another man breaking in through a back window, according to the arrest report.

The man who lived there walked out of his room, where he came face to face with the intruder, who was armed with what police later said was a “shank,” a piece of wood crafted into a sharp angle. He ordered the homeowner to sit down on a couch, then repeatedly asked the homeowner “where the gun was.”

The homeowner didn’t own a gun, he told the intruder, pleading with him to leave. The intruder did, only after taking the homeowner’s black leather wallet, black Prada shoulder bag and the homeowner’s car keys and car, a 2015 Toyota RAV4.

On his way out, the intruder dropped and damaged the man’s laptop computer, which he left. That’s when the homeowner called police.

As officers were dispatched to the Hawk Bay home, the man in the stolen RAV4 took off, driving erratically. He slammed into the Talon Pointe complex’s gates before running a few red lights on his getaway route, according to the arrest report.

Less than 4 miles away, he wrecked into another woman’s car at 9936 Coral Sands Drive, near Sahara Avenue and Hualapai Way. Instead of stopping, he continued driving, but not for long — about a half-mile from the wreck, the RAV4 careened off the road and into a brick dividing wall on the 2900 block of Setting Sun Street.

Though the stolen car stopped, the man didn’t. He ran off, invading another home nearby through an unlocked back door.

Inside that house, he demanded water from a woman, who yelled at him to “get out.” The man then walked into the home’s garage, the arrest report said.

Startled, the woman went to her boyfriend for help, and together they went into the garage to confront the intruder, who they found sitting inside a parked car, which he told the couple he was “trying to steal,” the arrest report said.

The boyfriend got closer, and the man tried to fight him, the arrest report said.

As the boyfriend tried to subdue the intruder, another man who lives at the home pulled up in a car. Together, he and the boyfriend pinned down the intruder until police arrived, the report said. The woman took photos of the man.

In police custody, the man was treated at Summerlin Hospital Medical Center for injuries sustained during the fight, the arrest report said. He was taken to jail once he was released from the hospital.

Chavira will be in court Wednesday morning. He was previously convicted of robbery with a deadly weapon and burglary, according to the arrest report and court records.
