11 best deals at Fresh & Easy, Haggen before they close — PHOTOS

With the Fresh & Easy and Haggen wind-downs already in action, many of the combined 21 closing stores across the valley are offering up to 50 percent off what’s left of their inventory.

The two Calif.-based grocery chains are set to close on Nov. 13 and Nov. 24, respectively,  in Las Vegas, but that doesn’t mean you can’t take make the most of your time left with them. Here are 10 deals worth keeping an eye on, and taking advantage of for yourself.

AT HAGGEN:

17 oz. Extra Virgin Olive Oil — 30 percent off, for $4.19

Among the pricey extra virgin olive oil selections at most grocery stores, the Haggen brand offers a cheaper bottle of supposedly the same product. Normally $5.99, the 30 percent discounted price of $4.19 makes the Haggen oil about three bucks cheaper than name brand competitors like Pompeian and Bertolli.

Bertolli “Classic” frozen meals for two — 30 percent off, for $5.10

Speaking of Bertolli, their frozen “Classic” meals-for-two are among the best bargains at Haggen this week. Normally priced at $7.29, the discount gives shoppers a meal at a reasonable price.

“If you can feed two people with good stuff like that for only five bucks, you can’t go wrong,” Cynthia, an employee of a west valley Haggen, said.

Snack Pack pudding four-pack of 3.25 oz. cups — 30 percent off, for $1.53

A childhood favorite is hard to resist at $2.19, but even more difficult at $1.53. I grabbed chocolate, but other flavors still available included vanilla, chocolate-vanilla, and of course, tapioca.

L’Oreal Excellence “Level 3” hair-coloring  — 40 percent off, for $6.00

Another product you don’t necessarily go to a grocery store to buy, the L’Oreal box coloring is as cheap as you’ll find for the “Level 3” line, thanks to a 40 percent discount off its $9.99 price.

Fix-a-Flat 16 oz. standard tire inflation and sealer — 40 percent off, for $6.00

Yes, Fix-a-Flat, of all things, is one of Haggen’s best buys this week. Normally priced at $9.99, the 16 oz. can is available for $6. At a grocery store. Who knew?

AT FRESH & EASY

The Big Kahuna brand 25.3 oz. Shiraz wine — 40 percent off, for $2.39

“Catch the wave,” the Fresh & Easy “Big Kahuna” brand wine writes on the front of its bottle. That’s not a bad idea, considering the four-buck Shiraz now costs just $2.39, and will likely become extinct a week from now.

Bare Organic 33.8 oz. mixers, pomegranate cranberry cosmo flavor— 50 percent off, for $1.98

A liter of organic mixer for $2? That’s almost as cheap as bottled water. Enough said.

Classic 18 oz. barbecue sauce — 50 percent off, for $0.98

Normally $1.99, Fresh & Easy’s 18 oz. barbecue sauce is probably the least expensive sauce left in the store. A sample test confirms it’s not terrible, either. Unfortunately, all of the Fresh & Easy pasta sauces were long gone by Thursday.

Earth’s Best brand “Stage 2” 4 oz. organic baby food — 40 percent off, for $0.71

A series of irresistible flavors, like green beans and rice, vegetable turkey dinner and harvest squash turkey, make EB’s “Stage 2” products a logical choice for Las Vegas Valley babies aged six months and older. Normally $1.19, the 4 oz. size costs just $0.71 this week.

16 oz. Creamy Cashew Butter — 50 percent off, for $3.50

Peanut butter is long gone from the Fresh & Easy discount shelves, but its $7 cashew butter, on sale for $3.50, is arguably the best deal in the store.

“It has about the same nutritional value as peanut butter, people just don’t buy as much because it’s usually more expensive,” said a two-year employee of the 7595 Vegas Dr. location.

Suave Kids 12 oz. shampoo and conditioners  — 40 percent off, for $1.68

Normally $2.79, the combined shampoo and conditioner product is over a dollar cheaper than usual. Why not?

Still not interested? Employees from both Fresh & Easy and Haggen said as the stores get closer to closing time, discounts could reach as high as 75% on remaining items. “Next week, you’ll see prices dropping even more,” Cynthia said.
