McCarran logs best June performance since 2007

More than 4.1 million airline passengers passed through McCarran International last month, marking the airport’s best June performance since 2007, the Clark County Department of Aviation will report Thursday.

The nation’s eighth-busiest airport saw an overall 5.7 percent hike in departing and arriving passengers over June 2015.

Domestic and international carriers saw significant gains at McCarran last month, airport officials said.

More than 3.7 million airline passengers boarded or arrived on domestic flights last month, a 5.6 percent jump from a year earlier. International flights arriving or departing McCarran carried 313,365 travelers in June, a 7.7 percent increase from a year earlier.

Air Canada saw a 38.2 percent increase in traffic with 71,104 passengers, while the Canadian carrier WestJet was down 11.9 percent with 75,526 passengers. South America’s lukewarm economy has affected Panama-based Copa Airlines, which was down 11.1 percent from last year.

British Airways carried 29,305 passengers in June, a 12.7 percent leap from last year.

Mexican carrier Interjet reported an 85 percent jump to 9,126 passengers in June, while Aeromexico saw a 2.9 percent increase to 25,888 passengers. Volaris reported 17,997 passengers last month, a 7.8 percent decline compared with the same period last year.

Year-over-year figures show that more than 23.2 million airline passengers traveled through Las Vegas during the first half of 2016, a 5.6 percent increase from the same period last year.

Once again, four of the airport’s top five carriers continued to report growth. No. 5 Spirit Airlines reported the biggest leap in traffic, up 17.7 percent with 280,800 passengers in June. Market leader Southwest reported more than 1.6 million passenger last month, a 1.3 percent increase from last year.

United Airlines, the fourth-largest carrier serving McCarran, again showed a decline as passenger counts dropped by 3.7 percent to 281,490 passengers in June.

American Airlines, the No. 2 carrier at McCarran, reported a 6.5 percent increase, with 430,946 passengers in June. Third-place Delta reported a 4.1 percent increase from June 2015 with 340,580 passengers last month.
