NV Energy charging extra for refusing smart meter

NV Energy officials have prepared a draft order to present Tuesday to the state Public Utilities Commission to establish an alternative system for an estimated 10,000 customers who want to opt out of new smart-meter technology.
The 35-page document was released Wednesday before the Thanksgiving holiday.
The draft order notes that in Southern Nevada, it would cost $98.75 to install the alternative meter plus a monthly fee of $9. In Northern Nevada, installation would cost $107.66 with a $10 monthly fee.
NV Energy has installed about 1.3 million smart meters, which transmit meter-reading data directly from a home or business to the utility and allows to track use. The smart meters have created a furor because some customers critical of the meters fear they invade their privacy or might cause health hazards.
