Orleans Arena wins LEED Gold certification from U.S. Green Building Council.

The Orleans Arena has been awarded LEED Gold certification for existing buildings by the U.S. Green Building Council.

Boyd Gaming Corp., which operates the arena as part of The Orleans casino, will receive the honor at halftime of the West Coast Conference basketball tournament’s championship game Tuesday.

The Orleans Arena is the first in Nevada to receive LEED Gold recognition. Other arenas that have earned the sustainability recognition, include AmericanAirlines Arena in Miami; Amway Center in Orlando, Fla.; Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh; Philips Arena in Atlanta; the Moda Center in Portland, Ore.; and the Toyota Center in Houston.

The certification caps a multiyear effort to incorporate sustainable practices throughout the arena’s operations.

Through a variety of measures, the arena significantly reduced its energy consumption, and reduced the amount of waste sent to local landfills by 25 percent.

The Orleans Arena is the second Boyd Gaming facility in Nevada to receive LEED certification. In 2009, the company’s linen and uniform service in Henderson received LEED Silver certification.
