Valeo North America tapped to work with Tesla

Valeo North America, a global automotive supplier and partner to automakers is slated to work with Tesla on developing “intuitive driving” in Nevada.

“Intuitive driving is an experience more than a product,” a Valeo representative said Thursday at the Governor’s Office of Economic Development Board meeting in Las Vegas. “It’s the result of how you put systems together with a driver.”

The company will co-locate on the Tesla site east of Reno and plans to manufacture automotive battery-cooling systems that help to reduce carbon emissions. The plant may also incorporate production of its home-climate control products and other automotive products.

Tesla did not return a request for comment.

Valeo representatives said the company intends to invest an estimated $40 million for capital equipment within the first two years, and plans to initially hire 174 employees at an average wage of $21 per hour.

“This is what we talked about when we had the Tesla project,” Gov. Brian Sandoval said. “It was about the other companies that are part of that process and without that you would not have likely otherwise locate here.”

The governor’s office of economic development approved more than $3.8 million in tax abatements for Valeo on Thursday with expected new tax revenue of more than $1.3 billion.
