Air conditioning units stolen from Boys and Girls Club

Things are heating up at the Donald W. Reynolds clubhouse, part of the Boys and Girls Club of Southern Nevada.

Three air conditioning units were stolen from the roof of the 10-year-old, 53,000 square foot clubhouse at 2980 Robindale Road near Eastern Avenue, where kids spend their summer hours.

“We’re just appalled,” clubhouse CEO Ken Rubeli said. “It’s sickening that someone would steal period, but especially from a Boys and Girls club that’s doing great things. We’re very focused on catching this person.”

The theft happened sometime early last week, according to Rubeli.

They noticed it was hot in some of the rooms Wednesday, and it didn’t improve Thursday. When air conditioning repair personnel came Friday to check things out, they discovered a 12-ton unit, a 4-ton unit and a 3-ton unit were missing.

For the kids, it means they are restricted from using their game room, computer lab, art room and cafeteria, the four rooms those units cooled. Rubeli said they hope to have the units replaced early next week.

“They can’t comprehend that someone would do this to them,” clubhouse director Adam Jimenez said. “It limits our impact with the kids.”

Since the theft, there has been a 10 percent decrease in attendance, according to Jimenez. The clubhouse usually has 155 kids daily.

“It’s summer break,” he said. “They’re here to have fun. They’re here to learn, and now they can’t do that.”

Rubeli personally offered a $1,000 cash reward for information leading up to an arrest. He said the incident caused $25,000 in damage.
