Man who attacked officer at jail was seeking revenge

Michael Law, the man who attacked Clark County jail guards with a baseball bat Wednesday, told detectives he was seeking revenge after police failed to thoroughly investigate after he was robbed last week.

“Law said the police did nothing to help him, so he was going to hurt the first police officer in uniform that he saw,” Law’s Las Vegas police arrest report said.

“He decided to take revenge on the ‘corrupt Metropolitan Police Department’,” the report said.

Law, 25, knew there would be many officers at the jail, so that’s where he went. Two officers, Darren McCray and Nicholas Eubanks, saw Law walking in with the bat in his hand.

Eubanks told McCray: “He can’t possibly be trying to come in here with a baseball bat,” the report said.

Law didn’t give the officers much time to react. He charged through the door and started swinging at McCray’s head. McCray was hit in the head, neck, jaw and finger, the report said.

The two officers were able to subdue Law until more officers arrived. In addition to the bat, Law also carried a knife, the report said.

Law later told police he swung the bat between 20 and 30 times, although he only connected a few times. He said he knew McCray was not involved in the Saturday robbery investigation that ignited his anger, but he wanted revenge on the entire department.

Law said “he was pleased with his decision, given his previous treatment by the Department,” the report said.

The report doesn’t say if Law explained how police failed to investigate the alleged robbery.

Police spokeswoman officer Laura Meltzer said detectives have been unable to find a report or call that had anything to do with Law that would substantiate his claims. They’re also trying to find out if Law actually called police.

“We haven’t verified it yet,” she said.

In addition to the knife and the bat, Law tried to smuggle another object into the jail.

While searching Law’s body for more weapons, detectives found a plastic bag dangling from between Law’s buttocks. The bag contained a crumpled picture of Law.

Law had “wrapped up a picture of himself in the Saran Wrap and stuffed it inside his anal cavity to further mess with the corrections officers,” he told police.

McCray and Law were both hospitalized. Law was eventually taken back to the jail, where he was booked on charges of attempted murder on a police officer, assault on a police officer and battery on a police officer.

This wasn’t Law’s first encounter with Las Vegas police, or his first trip to the Clark County jail.

In 2007, police arrested Law on charges of strong-arm robbery. Later that year, he was arrested on charges of obstructing a public officer.

In 2008, he was arrested on a warrant related to the obstruction charge. He was also booked on burglary and grand larceny charges, police said.
