New charges in crime spree that led to death of Eldorado teacher
One of two youths who is accused of participating in a robbery spree that preceded the death of an Eldorado High School teacher has been indicted by a Clark County grand jury.
Gorgi Gonzalez faces one count of armed robbery, burglary and conspiracy in connection with the robbery of a couple in the northeast valley in the wee hours of Oct. 20.
The other youth, Gonzalez's brother, also faces charges but has not been identified because he is a minor, authorities said.
Gonzalez's age was unavailable Wednesday, but he was described as a teenager. He and his brother reportedly parted from the six other young adults and teenagers who continued that night with a robbery spree that led to the death of teacher Timothy VanDerbosch.
The six other defendants all face 24 felony counts, including one count of murder and 10 counts of armed robbery. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty against two of the defendants, Saul Favela, 19, and David Rosas, 20.
Marcos Coronel Castrejon, 20, Bridget Lugo, 20, Marisol Diaz, 16, and Daniel Carrillo, 16, are also charged in the case. All eight defendants are in custody.
VanDerbosch, 50, was walking to work at about 5 a.m. when he was attacked. Authorities said he was chased down and pummeled by the pack, which left him unconscious near Washington Avenue and Betty Lane, where he was hit by a passing truck. He later died at University Medical Center.
Authorities said the defendants began their spree about 1:30 a.m. by driving around the northeast valley seeking people to rob.
Investigators have described the group as a "party crew" motivated by the thrill of random violence.
The group attacked nine victims before VanDerbosch: a man on his way to his first day at a cab company, a man and a woman walking home from a bus stop, a couple taking in the view of Las Vegas and a group of four people.
The cabdriver cooperated, giving up everything he had of value but was still stabbed, police said.
Two other victims were pistol-whipped and suffered substantial injuries.
