Police arrest Amargosa Valley man for homicide

A 58-year-old Amargosa Valley man was arrested Sunday on a murder charge after authorities said he shot and killed a man.

Avery Church was booked on charges of murder and assault with a deadly weapon after he shot and killed John Sprague, according to the Nye County sheriff’s office.

Officers said Sprague confronted Church at Church’s home at 1178 N. Tamarack Road about an incident involving four teens earlier that day.

Church reportedly pointed a gun at four teenagers collecting firewood near his home about 3 p.m. and then fired the gun into a nearby stump. Church had argued with the same teenagers Friday, police said.

The teenagers told Sprague and another adult about the incident.

Church told police he shot Sprague in self-defense after Sprague punched him.

Church was jailed without bail.
