Preliminary hearing set in murder-for-hire case

Las Vegas firefighter George Tiaffay and Noel "Greyhound" Stevens, the homeless man authorities said Tiaffay hired to kill his estranged wife, will face a preliminary hearing in January, a Las Vegas judge ruled Monday.

Justice of the Peace Deborah Lippis will decide at the Jan. 24 hearing whether prosecutors have enough evidence for a trial.

Tiaffay, 40, and Stevens, 37, who appeared in court shackled and wearing navy blue county jail scrubs, each face one count of murder with a deadly weapon, robbery and burglary and three counts of conspiracy.

The two men were arrested last week and charged with first-degree murder for the death of Shauna Tiaffay, 46, a Palms cocktail waitress whose body was found in her Summerlin home last month.

Authorities think George Tiaffay paid Stevens $600 to beat his ex-wife to death with a hammer. George Tiaffay was with the couple's 8-year-old daughter when they found the body at the Willowbrook Apartments, 2601 S. Pavilion Center Drive, near the intersection of Sahara Avenue and the Las Vegas Beltway.
