Victim’s girlfriend says he took keys from drunk roommate before she shot him

A woman who shot and killed her roommate Thursday night was angry because he stopped her from driving drunk, according to the victim’s girlfriend.

But Mary Pitrello, 26, told police she killed Oliver Doppert after he’d raped her about a week earlier at their apartment in the 9050 Warm Springs Road, near El Capitan Way, according to her arrest report.

Police were skeptical of Pitrello’s claim. She never reported a rape to police and spent the day drinking at the pool with Doppert and another friend, Stevie Lynn Bast, the report said.

Doppert’s girlfriend told detectives Pitrello was angry because her boyfriend took away Pitrello’s car keys. He didn’t want Pitrello to drive after she’d been drinking, the girlfriend told police said.

Pitrello had other plans. She fired a shotgun through Doppert’s bedroom door as he spoke on the phone with his girlfriend, police said. His girlfriend heard a “boom,” a gurgling sound and a woman’s voice, the report said.

Doppert died at the apartment.

Pitrello and Bast left the home after the shooting and fled to the Stratosphere casino. Police were notified after Bast, who cooperated with police, reported the crime to casino security guards. Pitrello was arrested at a casino bar.

She was booked at the Clark County jail on charges of murder with a deadly weapon, robbery with a deadly weapon and assault with a deadly weapon.

Police did not anticipate charges will be filed against Bast.
