UNLV law school hosts Aug. 27 event to help people seal criminal records
UNLV’s Boyd School of Law is hosting a free “clean slate” event Aug. 27 to help people with criminal histories in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas and Henderson seal their records.
“Nearly one in three Americans of working age have had some sort of encounter with the criminal justice system – mostly for relatively minor, non-violent offenses, and sometimes from decades in the past,” the law school wrote in a news release. “The long-term impact of a criminal record prevents many people from obtaining employment, housing, higher education, and credit.”
Attorneys and law students will volunteer their time at the 7th Annual Community Law Day event, which will be held 9 a.m. to noon on Aug. 27 at Doolittle Community Center, 1950 J Street.
Attendees will be able to interview with an attorney, have their court paperwork prepared, have their case reviewed by a district or city attorney, and have a judge issue a decision, all on the same day.
Anyone interested in sealing their records at the event should go to the Community Law Day website, follow directions listed there and submit required documents to the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada by Aug. 11, the release said.
