10 new Netflix movies to watch this weekend

Netflix added several movies to its streaming catalog this week. Here are some previously unavailable flicks you should check out this week:

Rocky (1976, PG)

A struggling boxer trying to reach the big time gets a chance to fight a heavyweight champion, and ends up learning how to respect himself. It’s a must-watch if you want to understand why so many movies include power-runs up the stairs of famous buildings.

Mean Girls (PG-13, 2004)

A home-schooled teen from Africa tries to fit in at her new high school and ends up falling in with the most popular, feared group in school — to her ultimate undoing. Women in their 20s can probably still quote this one line by line.

Titanic (1997, PG-13)

A teenage aristocrat falls in love with a poor artist aboard the ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic. You know how it ends, but you’ll still need some Kleenex.

Braveheart (1995, R)

A commoner leads Scottish warriors in a revolt against an English tyrant after the commoner’s secret bride is executed for assaulting a soldier who tried to rape her. It’s one of those movies everyone assumes you’ve seen, so you better be able to throw out a good quote every once in a while.

Chinatown (1974, R)

A private detective finds himself caught up in a web of corruption after being hired to expose an adulterer. It cemented Jack Nicholson’s place among America’s great actors and was the last movie Roman Polanski made in the U.S. before fleeing the country in disgrace.

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000, PG-13)

A couple of warriors are on the hunt for a stolen sword when they meet a nobleman’s daughter who is in cahoots with the bad guys. Made on a $17 million budget, it’s one of those movies that no one expected to become an international hit.

Jumanji (1995, PG)

Two kids find a magical board game and unleash a man who has been trapped in it for decades — along with dangers that can only be stopped by finishing the game. Anyone who grew up (or raised kids) in the ‘90s will remember one of Kirsten Dunst’s first major films.

A League of their Own (1992, PG)

Two sisters try to balance their rivalry with each other and their desire to see success on the first professional female baseball league. It’s made pretty much every list of the best sports movies ever.

Coneheads (1993, PG)

Aliens with — yep — coneheads end up stranded on Earth and end up growing fond of the planet. It grew out of a “Saturday Night Live” sketch and is basically a forerunner to “3rd Rock from the Sun.”

Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977, PG)

A man has an encounter with UFOs and ends up feeling drawn to an isolated area where some crazy stuff is about to go down. It’s one of Steven Spielberg’s most cherished films and was released to critical acclaim.

The Terminator (1984, R)

A cyborg travels from 2029 to 1984 to assassinate a waitress who is pregnant with a child who will ultimately lead humanity in a war against the machines. Part of the Arnold Schwarzenegger canon you can’t miss.
