Alkaline Trio, AFI playing shows at House of Blues

The Misfits’ “Legacy of Brutality” lives on, not just via the band itself, but by the scads of groups inspired by the goth punk forebears, two of whom visit the House of Blues on consecutive nights this weekend.
On Friday, there’s Alkaline Trio, who initially echoed The Misfits’ none-more-black wardrobe, dark imagery and high-velocity hooks, but have since embraced increasingly poppier, synth-abetted sounds whose brightness is leavened by frontman Matt Skiba’s soot-colored sense of humor.
On Saturday, here comes AFI, who hit town for the first time in support of their biting new record, “Burials,” released Tuesday.
Since first bringing eyeliner and fishnets to the Warped Tour over a decade ago, the band has increasingly channeled its New Wave and electronica influences, with The Cure and Depeche Mode figuring as prominently into their repertoire as The Misfits once did.
“Burials,” though, is as sharp and hard as a gravedigger’s spade.
