A lucky 13 suggestions for National Pizza Month

Maybe it's because of the influx of Italians back in the day, but Las Vegas seems to have more than its share of pizzerias, most of them turning out fantastic pies. In honor of October as National Pizza Month, here are a baker's dozen of our favorites:

Anthony & Mario's Broadway Pizzeria, 840 S. Rancho Drive: A newsroom favorite, Broadway offers variations like the Sicilian Marinara, with no mozzarella, just tomato sauce, fresh garlic, Romano cheese, olive oil and basil.

Blaze Pizza, 10520 S. Eastern Ave., Henderson, and 6211 N. Decatur Blvd.: Of the "Chipotle-style" genre of choose-your-own-toppings pizzerias, Blaze also offers signature pies if you can't make up your mind.

Dom DeMarco's Pizzeria, 9785 W. Charleston Blvd.: An offshoot of Brooklyn landmark DiFara, Dom DeMarco's serves pies with thick or thin crusts, including The DiFara Special, a square pizza with red sauce, hand-cut pepperoni, fresh and aged mozzarella, Grana Padano, fresh basil and olive oil.

Due Forni Pizza, 3555 S. Town Center Drive: "Due forni" means "two ovens" in Italian, and they produce both crackery Roman crusts and stretchy Neapolitan ones, in variations like the Tartufo, with black truffles, Parmigiano-Reggiano crema, Fontina Fontal, roasted cremini mushrooms and an over-easy egg.

Five50, Aria, 3730 Las Vegas Blvd. South: James Beard Award-winning chef Shawn McClain mixes it up with pizzas like the Farmstead, with prosciutto, creme fraiche, an egg and country olives.

Grimaldi's Pizzeria, five locations in the valley: Grimaldi's introduced five specialty chef-selection pizzas in honor of National Pizza Month, including Quattro Formaggi, with mozzarella, Asiago, Parmesan, Pecorino Romano and Gorgonzola.

Metro Pizza, multiple locations: A Las Vegas landmark for decades, Metro makes pizza in a number of styles, including stuffed, like the Chicago, with sauteed spinach and cheese.

Old School Pizzeria, 2040 E. Craig Road, North Las Vegas: American-born and Sicilian-bred Giovanni DeMauro, scion of the Nora's Italian Cuisine family, does indeed do things the old-school way (like making his own yeast) in variations such as Vegas Meets Italy, with smoked and regular mozzarella, ricotta, pistachios and dates with arugula, prosciutto and cherry tomatoes.

Pieology Pizzeria, 10965 Lavender Hills Drive in Downtown Summerlin and 365 Hughes Center Drive: A humorous spirit personified in "Be Alfredo; be very Alfredo," the walk-the-line, design-your-own pizzeria offers a few signatures, such as Smokin' Buffalo Chicken, with spicy Buffalo sauce, chicken, Gorgonzola, mozzarella, cilantro and olive oil.

Pizza Rock, multiple locations: From 11-time World Pizza Champion Tony Gemignani, the flagship on Third Street downtown, with offshoots at Green Valley Ranch in Henderson and Palace Station, prepares multiple styles of pizza in ovens suited just for them, including the Sausage & Stout, with honey-malted Guinness dough, house-made mozzarella, beer sausage, caramelized onions, Fontina, green onions, crushed red peppers, beer salt and a sweet Guinness reduction.

Rosati's Pizza, multiple locations: While a number of styles are available, we can't imagine not going with the Chicago-style deep dish, with a thick crust, chunky sauce, cheese and whatever else you want to add.

Settebello Pizzeria Napoletana, 140 Green Valley Parkway in Henderson and 9350 W. Sahara Ave.: So authentic it's sanctioned by the Italian government, Settebello serves pies like they do in the old country, so don't go looking for pepperoni.

Trevi Italian Restaurant, The Forum Shops at Caesars, 3500 Las Vegas Blvd. South: In honor of National Pizza Month, Trevi is offering different specialty pizzas each day for $10, such as herb-roasted chicken with roasted garlic, caramelized onions, roasted tomatoes and goat cheese.
