What to watch before the summer ends
With August being over half way done, many people are making their way back to places of learning. For those that are heading back to school in the near future, here are three family movies to help you soak up the last few days of summer.
What would a best family summer movie list be without summer’s greatest pastime called baseball? In “Million Dollar Arm,” JB Bernstein is a down on his luck sports agent who is looking for the next big thing in baseball. In his desperation, Bernstein hatches a radical idea of turning cricket stars in India into baseball pitchers. Will his scheme pay off? Will he get more than he bargained for when he originally dreamt up this crazy idea? If you and members of your family are baseball fans and you want a movie that delivers good messages, then “Million Dollar Arm” may be right up your alley.

Did you ever attend summer camp as a child? If you did, hopefully you never had to deal with someone like Tony Perkis in “Heavyweights.” In the film, Camp Hope is a summer camp for overweight children to be around kids with similar builds, lose some weight, have fun and build great relationships. That all changes when the original owners of the camp go bankrupt and sell the camp to exercise freak Tony Perkis. Perkis becomes obsessed with getting the children into shape at all costs. The film chronicles the children’s rebellion against the cruel Perkis. Check out “Heavyweights” if you and the family are in need of a good laugh and see Ben Stiller in one of his original starring roles.

While summer is a time of relaxation and vacation for many kids, there are countless others who have summer jobs. Still, it is probably safe to say that most of these kids do not have to dig holes all day under the hot Texas sun like the children in the aptly named film “Holes.” In the movie, a young Shia LaBeouf plays Stanley Yelnats, who is convicted of a crime he did not commit and is sentenced to dig holes at Camp Green Lake. While the agenda of the camp is supposedly to teach the boys hard work and discipline, there are deeper reasons for them digging holes that involves mystery and hidden treasure. Check out “Holes” if you and your family enjoy adventures.
