Smith Center adds a week to run of ‘The Tempest’
The world premiere of William Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” — co-adapted and directed by Las Vegas’ own Teller — will sail on a week longer than planned at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts.
Due to popular demand, an additional week of performances has been added to the production’s April debut; “The Tempest” will now play April 6-20 in a 500-seat, climate-controlled tent in the center’s Symphony Park.
“We are thrilled at the community’s response to ‘The Tempest,’ ” Smith Center president Myron Martin said in a news release. “We are adding an additional week of performances to meet demand and allow more guests to experience the world premiere of this incredible staging of the classic William Shakespeare play with an inventive, magical twist.”
Adapted and directed by teller and collaborator Aaron Posner, with magic by Teller, “The Tempest” will feature music by Tom Waits and Kathleen Brennan, his wife and frequent collaborator, while Matt Kent of Pilobolus will oversee the play’s movement.
Harvard University’s American Repertory Theatre — original home of the Tony-winning revivals of “Pippin” and “The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess” — will co-produce the play with The Smith Center.
Patrick Page (whose credits range from the Utah Shakespeare Festival to the Green Goblin in Broadway’s “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark”) will portray Prospero, a wizard who rules over an island realm populated by, among others, spirits and monsters. To say nothing of the shipwrecked aristocrats who find themselves immersed in a world of trickery and magic.
After “The Tempest’s” world premiere at The Smith Center, the show will move to Cambridge, Mass., to begin performances at A.R.T., followed by runs in Washington, D.C., and New York City.
Performances will be at 8 p.m. Tuesdays-Sundays, with matinees at 2:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. Tickets — priced from $35 to $65 — are currently on sale at The Smith Center box office, 361 Symphony Park Ave., online at www.thesmithcenter.com or by phone at 702-749-2000.
