New ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ photos unveiled

LOS ANGELES — From a closer look at John Boyega's runaway stormtrooper to C-3PO's updated gear, new photos from "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" offer a better portrait of the film. Entertainment Weekly unveiled the images from this week's issue — their annual Fall Movie Preview — on Wednesday.

We also learn how Lucasfilm president and producer Kathleen Kennedy persuaded J.J. Abrams into directing "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" after his initial refusal.

"In the context of talking about story and laying out what we were thinking, I said one thing to him, 'Who is Luke Skywalker?'" Kennedy told EW. "He said, 'Oh my God, I just got the chills. I'm in.'"

In this image, Daisy Ridley's scavenger Rey and Boyega's stormtrooper Finn escape from The First Order.

Adam Driver's Darth Vader-inspired baddie Kylo Ren shows off his crossbar lightsaber moves.

"Game of Thrones" star Gwendoline Christie plays First Order warrior Captain Phasma.

Rey releases BB-8 from a scavenger's net.

Kylo Ren and his First Order stormtroopers wreak havoc on a village in Jakku.

C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) has a new red arm, while lifelong pal R2-D2 retains his signature look.

"Star Wars: The Force Awakens" hits theaters on December 18.
