99 Words About … The final episodes of FX’s ‘Rescue Me’

They say all's well that ends well.

The "Rescue Me" gang should take comfort in that.

After years of frustrating twists and turns, Denis Leary's acclaimed firefighting drama sticks the landing with its heartbreaking-yet-hilarious final two episodes (10 p.m. Wednesday and Sept. 7, FX).

Tommy's ghosts. Drinking, not drinking, drinking again. Pretty much anything involving Sheila. "Rescue Me" seemed to go out of its way to deny viewers what they wanted most: letting the boys of Ladder 62 be boys.

If 9/11 gave the drama its soul, those ball-busting sessions were its heart.

It's beating again just in time.
