Assistance League collects shoes for local children

The Venetian and Palazzo sponsored an evening of fun, fashion and charity with plenty of sole on Oct. 7.

Members of Assistance League of Las Vegas and their guests were invited to the Azure Pool, where each person was asked to donate a pair of brand-new children's athletic shoes to fill the racks of the group's Operation School Bell, which provides new school clothing to more than 7,000 children annually.

Guests partook of food and drinks from the Palazzo's Lagasse's Stadium and Zine and The Venetian's Valentino, as they visited cabana boutiques where The Shoppes at Palazzo and The Venetian's Grand Canal Shoppes showcased fall fashion footwear.

Opportunity tickets were available for a chance to win 13 prizes from The Shoppes. Charlotte Besuden, Assistance League president, thanked The Venetian and the Palazzo's Dawn Britt, director of public relations, and Richard Hudock and Carrie Giverson for the event, which was attended by about 600 guests.

Epicurean Charitable Foundation: The ninth annual scholarship gala took place at the M Resort on Oct. 8. The event supports scholarships that enable recipients to receive personal guidance and mentoring, as well as employment opportunities from food and beverage executives from around the world.

The foundation's founder, Rino Armeni, introduced the event's honoree, Tony Marnell, developer, designer, builder, and hotel-casino owner and operator.

Marnell was the recipient of the foundation's 2010 Imperium award.

More than 500 guests, including Louise and Felix Rappaport, University of Nevada, Las Vegas basketball coach Lon Kruger and Barbara Kruger, Lincoln Spoor, Marcie and Lloyd Wentzell, Bob O'Brien, Laura and Ken Johnson, Barbara Lee and Bruce Woollen, Sandy Peltyn, Kelley and Arron Anderson, Lydia and Bill Hiers, and Rene Werner, participated in the poolside cocktail reception and silent auction.

Dinner was prepared by 36 Las Vegas restaurants, which offered their specialty dishes. A concert by Train concluded the evening.
