Driver escapes truck as it plunges into Lake Michigan

CHICAGO — Officials say icy conditions caused a City of Chicago maintenance truck to slide into Lake Michigan on Chicago’s Near North Side.

It happened near Oak Street beach at 1000 N. Lake Shore Drive Friday morning, according to WGN.

Officials say the ice on the beach platform and bike trail caused the truck to slide into the lake. The truck driver managed to jump out of the truck before it went in.

The driver of the maintenance truck is doing OK but was taken to an area hospital as a precaution.

Authorities say they will resume locating the truck Saturday when the weather is a little warmer.
