Survival of the Fittest
Jessica Barajas broke down in a Ross dressing room recently. The 25-year-old couldn't believe the size she'd become and began "crying hysterically" at the realization. They were tears of joy.
"Fitting into a size 12 was amazing for me," she says. As a patient of the Gastric Band Institute of Las Vegas, Barajas will surely see a few more size demotions. The only downside: Her incredible shrinking figure, as exciting as it is, also means a shrinking wallet. Cue a few more tears.
Barajas has had to replenish her wardrobe several times during her 76-pound weight loss. Dieters and new mothers often endure the same consequence, which can sometimes make for a mixed blessing.
To alleviate the financial stress, Gastric Band Institute recently offered a clothing exchange in which clients made a free boutique of their now ill-fitting clothes. Jenna Doughton, local personal stylist, was on hand to offer advice on how to get the most mileage out of clothing when significant weight loss is anticipated. Here's a look at some of her fashion tips:
1. Belts are your friend. Not only are wide belts a fashion statement, they will aid in adjusting oversized tops and dresses to your current shape.
2. Keep pants and skirts neutral. Doughton recommends a basic black pant with each significant weight loss because it is versatile and slimming.
3. Wrap dresses. "They're the biggest no-brainer," says Doughton. This stretchy garment can accommodate up to two size differentials.
4. Invest only in accessories. Keep the tops and bottoms budget-friendly. But bags, shoes and jewelry will stay with you through any size.
5. Find a good tailor. Don't be so quick to abandon loose clothes. Take them to a tailor to see if it's worth the cost to size them down.
