Sunrise Hospital opens Hybrid Operating Room

A hybrid could change the way some surgeries are done in Southern Nevada.

Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center has completed its hybrid operating room, which it says will allow procedures that have not been available in the Las Vegas Valley.

"We are excited to have Sunrise continue to lead the way in heart care advancements," Sylvia Young, CEO of Sunrise Hospital and Sunrise Children's Hospital, said in a statement. "The new room brings the latest in heart care technology to the Las Vegas community and provides a vital service to our patients."

What kind of changes will the hybrid operating room bring?

Sunrise said in the statement that until recently the only way to get a new heart valve was to have open-heart surgery. Now Sunrise will offer a new valve replacement procedure, called transcatheter aortic valve replacement, which will allow some patients to undergo aortic valve replacement through a small incision in the skin. It is a state-of-the-art treatment for aortic valve stenosis and is minimally invasive.

Sunrise said it will begin performing transcatheter aortic valve replacement this spring in the hybrid operating room. The hybrid OR also allows heart procedures that used to be performed in two separate rooms (cardiac catheterizations and surgeries) to be performed in one room.

The hybrid OR came at a cost of
$3.6 million.
