PUBLIC INPUT REQUESTED ON LAKE MEAD RATE CHANGES

The National Park Service has designated the Lake Mead National Recreation Area as a Group 2 park. Lake Mead is seeking public comment through March 11 on proposed recreation fee increases to meet the new group rating.

Fees that are set to increase include: daily vehicle passes from $10 to $20; daily individual passes from $5 to $10; daily motorcycle passes from $10 to $15; annual vehicle passes from $30 to $40; annual vessel passes from $30 to $50; camping passes from $10 to $20 per night; and group camping passes from $30 to $80 per night. The daily vessel pass is set to remain at $16.

HENDERSON YOUTH SOFTBALL PLANNED

Youth softball signups for players ages 5 to 18 are planned through Feb. 26 at any city of Henderson recreation center or at cityofhenderson.com. Practices are set to begin after March 18, and the season runs the week of April 13 to the week of May 25. One child costs $50, two siblings are $45 per child and three or more siblings are $40 per child.

WALK WITH THE HEART OF A CHILD SET FOR FEB. 28

The 12th annual Walk with the Heart of a Child is set for 8 a.m. Feb. 28 at Fashion Show mall and supports Nevada-based Children’s Heart Foundation. Registration is planned at 7 a.m.

Walk with the Heart of a Child is a celebration that includes a fun walk, entertainment, raffle and Kids Zone. During this event, teams gather at the Fashion Show mall to walk in celebration and remembrance of children with heart conditions and to unite the community through awareness.

Fees are $25 for adults or $15 for virtual walkers, active-duty military, students and seniors.

COLOR RUN PLANNED FEB. 28

Tickets for the Color Run Las Vegas are on sale. The race is set for 8 a.m. Feb. 28 at 650 Fremont St. The Color Run’s focus is about enjoying a color-crazy day. A portion of the proceeds from the race will be donated to Three Square food bank.

BLACKLIGHT RUN PLANNED FEB. 28

A Blacklight Run is planned at 6 p.m. Feb. 28 at Sam Boyd Stadium, 7000 E. Russell Road. Check-in is set for 3 p.m. Participants may wear a white shirt or the Blacklight Run T-shirt provided at the race start, and they will be covered in a glow powder that will glow under blacklights during the race. Registration is $75 and includes a T-shirt, two LED jelly rings, two glow packs and LED shades.

BUBBLE RUN PLANNED FOR MARCH 7

The Bubble Run is planned at 9 a.m. March 7 at Sam Boyd Stadium, 7000 E. Russell Road. The cost for individuals is $40, and kids 6 or younger race free with an adult registration. WALK FOR WISHES SET TO SUPPORT MAKE-A-WISH

Powered by wish families, volunteers, donors, and friends, Walk For Wishes is a nationwide Make-A-Wish fundraiser that celebrates thousands of wishes that have already been granted, while raising funds for future wishes. Participants can help bring the life-changing impact of a wish to children battling life-threatening medical conditions in our community. On March 21, Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada partners with the Caesars Foundation to present its annual Walk for Wishes – Walk & 5K Run.

Registration begins at 6:45 a.m., with opening ceremonies at 7:30. The run is set to begin at 8 a.m. and the walk at 8:05.

FIREFIGHTERS ASSOCIATION PLANNING GOLF TOURNAMENT

The Henderson Firefighters Benevolent Association has scheduled its seventh annual Memorial Golf Tournament commemorating Jeff “The Pirate” Mann, a fallen Henderson firefighter, at 8 a.m. March 27 at Revere Golf Course, 600 Hampton Road.

Proceeds from the tournament will go toward supporting various local charities such as the Boys & Girls Clubs of Henderson, American Cancer Society, Rebuilding Together, Nevada Childhood Cancer Foundation, American Red Cross Southern Nevada Chapter, CASA Foundation and S.A.F.E. House.

Sponsorships begin at $120 for the Tee Box Package, which includes the name of a business advertised, and go up to $2,500 for the Hat Sponsor Package, which includes the name and logo of a business advertised on all hats provided to players. Cash gifts and other donations are welcome.

The registration fee is $100 per player or $400 per team. Each registration includes entry into the tournament, golf cart rental for two, driving range usage, a T-shirt and hat, one drink ticket, one bottle of water, hole-in-one contest entry, beer served throughout the day and lunch.

BONNIE SPRINGS 5K SET TO FIGHT DIABETES

The Wild West Cross Country 5K Challenge is scheduled at 7:30 a.m. March 28 at Bonnie Springs Ranch, 16935 Bonnie Springs Road. The event includes a 5K, 1 mile Fun Run and quarter-mile Kids’ Dash on an off-road, cross-country course. All participants are to receive a free entrance into Bonnie Springs Ranch and one raffle ticket. Proceeds support the Nevada Diabetes Association’s Camp Vegas.

FLAG FOOTBALL LEAGUE ACCEPTING SIGN-UPS

A flag football league for boys and girls ages 6 to 14 is open for registration, with divisions for Pee Wee (ages 6 to 8), Juniors (9 to 11) and Seniors (12 to 14).

The season is set to run March 14-May 9. The top eight teams will continue on to a citywide championship tournament to be played May 18-21 at All American Park, 1551 S. Buffalo Drive.

Fees are $85 per child, and uniforms are included. Awards and trophies will be handed out at the end of the season, and a playoff tournament is planned.

GARDENING CLASSES PLANNED

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the South Valley Rose Society are offering Gardening in Small Places classes. Upcoming dates are March 14, composting; April 4, irrigation; May 9, what’s bugging your garden; and June 13, organic gardening.

Class space is limited, and preregistration is required. There is a $25 fee for each class that includes class materials.

SKI RESORT OFFERS YOUTHS WINTER OUTDOORS PROGRAM

The Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort is offering its Snow Day program focused on getting local youths involved in outdoor winter recreation. The field trip-style youth program targets local public, private and home school groups and includes ski or snowboard lessons. Children can also learn about winter safety and the Spring Mountains National Recreation Area.

The program runs through March. The cost is $35 per student during weekdays, $45 on Saturdays and Sundays, with a complimentary chaperone ticket included for every 12 students. Groups are limited to 200 students and schools are required to provide one chaperone for every 20 students.

HENDERSON SEEKS ATHLETES FOR SENIOR GAMES

The city of Henderson is seeking athletes to take part in the 2015 Henderson Senior Games, set for April 11-26, an annual program that blends sporting and social events for athletes 50 or older. Athletes of all skill levels are invited to participate.

Registration is accepted through March 31 and is $15 per person (with the exception of volleyball), which includes a commemorative T-shirt. There is a cost of $3 to $5 per event. Registration packets are available at cityofhenderson.com and at all city of Henderson recreation centers.

The 2015 Henderson Senior Games are set to take place a variety of Henderson locations, including recreation centers, parks and schools. Awards are planned following each event.

BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS PLANNING YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUES

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada is planning to present a comprehensive basketball program that covers a large part of the Las Vegas Valley.

Mark Jacoby, area director for the clubs, is heading a basketball program in which children can learn teamwork, physical fitness and sportsmanship.

Prices start from $70, and the fee includes a 2015 membership to Boys & Girls Clubs. Leagues are open to children 5 to 12.

The United States Tennis Association-Nevada is offering free tennis lessons to players of all ages. Participants are asked to visit ustanevada.com to complete the registration form. They will be emailed a certificate to take a free tennis lesson at any of the participating facilities.

FENCING CAMPS PLANNED BY RED ROCK FENCING CENTER

Introduction to Fencing Camps for ages 5 to 9 and 9 to 15 are planned from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Red Rock Fencing Center, 8352 W. Warm Springs Road.

Participants will learn sportsmanship, the art and skill of fencing and have fun in the process. Fencing teaches focus, determination, coordination and thinking skills. Participants should bring lunch, but equipment will be supplied.

Camp fees are $200 per week, with an early drop-off fee of $20 per day from 7:30 to 9:15 a.m. The camp offers a 20 percent discount for siblings.
