BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS PLANNING YOUTH BASKETBALL LEAGUES

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada is planning to present a comprehensive basketball program that covers a large part of the Las Vegas Valley.

Mark Jacoby, area director for the clubs, is heading a basketball program in which children can learn teamwork, physical fitness and sportsmanship.

Prices start from $70, and the fee includes a 2015 membership to Boys & Girls Clubs. Leagues are open to children 5 to 12 years old.

League sign-ups are available at the Lied Memorial Clubhouse, 2850 Lindell Road; Southern Highlands Clubhouse, 10900 Southern Highlands Parkway; Andre Agassi Clubhouse, 800 N. Martin Luther King Blvd.; and John C. Kish Clubhouse, 401 Drake St. Practice times and game times vary.

WALK WITH THE HEART OF A CHILD SET FOR FEB. 28

The 12th annual Walk with the Heart of a Child is set for 8 a.m. Feb. 28 at Fashion Show Mall and supports Nevada-based Children’s Heart Foundation. Registration is planned at 7 a.m.

Walk with the Heart of a Child is a celebration that includes a fun walk, entertainment, raffle and Kids Zone. During this event, teams gather at the Fashion Show Mall to walk in celebration and remembrance of children with heart conditions and to unite the community through awareness.

Fees are $25 for adults or $15 for virtual walkers, active-duty military, students and seniors.

HENDERSON SEEKS ATHLETES FOR SENIOR GAMES

The city of Henderson is seeking athletes to take part in the 2015 Henderson Senior Games, set for April 11-26, an annual program that blends sporting and social events for athletes 50 or older. Athletes of all skill levels are invited to participate.

Registration is accepted through March 31 and is $15 per person (with the exception of volleyball), which includes a commemorative T-shirt. There is a cost of $3 to $5 per event. Registration packets are available online at cityofhenderson.com and at all city of Henderson recreation centers.

The 2015 Henderson Senior Games are set to take place a variety of Henderson locations, including recreation centers, parks and schools. Awards are planned following each event.

CAESARS FOUNDATION WALK FOR WISHES SET FOR MARCH

Make-A-Wish Southern Nevada and the Caesars Foundation are set to present the Walk For Wishes, planned for 7:30 a.m. March 21 at Town Square Las Vegas, 6605 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

Walk For Wishes is a nationwide Make-A-Wish fundraiser that celebrates thousands of wishes that have already been granted, while raising funds for future wishes.

Registration begins at 6:45 a.m.

RAINBOW YOUTH SOCCER LEAGUE SIGN-UPS PLANNED

Rainbow Youth Soccer League sign-ups for the spring 2015 season are scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 at Dunkin Donuts, 3481 S. Durango Drive. The league office is at 9360 W. Flamingo Road.

GARDENING CLASSES PLANNED

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension and the South Valley Rose Society are collaborating and offering educational meetings throughout the winter. A workshop on Gardening in Small Places: vegetables is planned from 8 a.m. to noon Feb. 14 at the learning center. Join Dr. Angela O’Callaghan to learn what types of containers to use, differences in potting mixes, using artificial light, fertilizers, success with seeds and more. Homeowners and other interested parties are welcome to attend.

Upcoming Gardening in Small Places workshop dates are March 14, composting; April 4, irrigation; May 9, what’s bugging your garden; and June 13, organic gardening.

Class space is limited and preregistration is required. There is a $25 fee for each class that includes class materials.

CITY OF NORTH LAS VEGAS OFFERING GOLF LESSONS

The city of North Las Vegas plans to offer winter session Par 3 Golf Lessons through Feb. 14. The instructional sessions offered include beginner for ages 6 to 16, adult for those 16 or older and intermediate for all ages, based on skill. BIG GAME 10K PLANNED FOR FEB. 1

The Big Game 10K is set for 8 a.m. Feb. 1 behind the Downtown Container Park on Carson Avenue and Seventh Street in downtown Las Vegas. The event celebrates the biggest weekend of the year in football. In addition to the 10K run, there is set to be a 5K Run/Community Walk and Kids’ Dashes. Cheerleaders and bands are set to appear along the course and at parties to cheer for the runners. Tim Kelly, president of the Las Vegas Track Club, is the race director.

SENIORS 5K MONEY RUN SCHEDULED

The Seniors & Masters 5K Money Run is set for 10 a.m. Feb. 21 at Kellogg-Zaher Park, 7901 W. Washington Ave. The race is open to those 40 or older, and prize money is planned for age categories of four or more people. COLOR RUN PLANNED FEB. 28

Tickets for the Color Run Las Vegas are on sale. The race is set for 8 a.m. Feb. 28 at 650 Fremont St. The Color Run’s focus is about enjoying a color-crazy day. A portion of the proceeds from the race will be donated to Three Square food bank.

USTA-NEVADA OFFERS FREE TENNIS LESSONS FOR ALL AGES

The United States Tennis Association-Nevada is offering free tennis lessons to players of all ages. Participants are asked to visit ustanevada.com to complete the registration form. They will be emailed a certificate to take a free tennis lesson at any of the participating facilities.

Free loaner tennis rackets are available through USTA-Nevada’s Racquet Recycle Program. Everyone who registers will receive a free Nevada Tennis Association membership, which includes a newsletter and special invitations to community tennis events.

FENCING CAMPS PLANNED BY RED ROCK FENCING CENTER

Introduction to Fencing Camps for ages 5 to 9 and 9 to 15 are planned from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Red Rock Fencing Center, 8352 W. Warm Springs Road.

Participants will learn sportsmanship, the art and skill of fencing and have fun in the process. Fencing teaches focus, determination, coordination and thinking skills. Participants should bring lunch, but equipment will be supplied.

Camp fees are $200 per week, with an early drop-off fee of $20 per day from 7:30 to 9:15 a.m. The camp offers a 20 percent discount for siblings.

The Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive, offers weekly fitness classes for active adults 50 or older from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Thursdays and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Fridays.

Classes include card and game activities, crafts, dance and fitness. The yearly membership is $2 and includes access to all activities, though some may have additional fees.
