RED ROCK 5K PLANNED SEPT. 20

The Red Rock 5K is planned for 8 a.m. Sept. 20 at Red Rock Country Club, 2250 Red Springs Drive. The race course is set to run over Arroyo Golf Course. Roughly 500 participants and 15 vendors are expected to attend. The entry fee is $35. Race packets are to be available Sept. 19 at a to-be-determined Sports Authority. CANDLELIGHTERS RACE PLANNED SEPT. 13

The Candlelighters Shine for Superhero 5K and 1 mile race with Cher Buchanan is planned Sept. 13 at Exploration Peak Park in Mountain’s Edge, 9600 S. Buffalo Drive.

Courses begin and end at the park and weave throughout the community. Popular superheroes are set to be on hand.

GOLF ASSOCIATION TOUR PLANNED SEPT. 24

The Southern Nevada Golf Association Tour 7 Club Event is planned for Sept. 24 at Silverstone Golf Club, 8600 Cupp Drive. The game is an 18-hole stroke play with seven clubs of your choice. Registraton fee ranges from $79 to $99 depending on membership. Visit snga.org.

WALK/RUN PLANNED TO SUPPORT CANCER AWARENESS

Two nonprofit groups are teaming up in Southern Nevada to raise awareness for prostate cancer and funds for local cancer patients during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. 21st Century C.A.R.E., the foundation dedicated to providing financial aid to cancer patients in need, and the Las Vegas Chapter of Us TOO Prostate Cancer Support Group, will be the main beneficiaries of the fourth annual This One’s for the Boys! 5K walk/run.

The event is planned for Sept. 27 at the UNLV track and field stadium, 4505 S. Maryland Parkway. Registration is set to begin at 8:30 a.m., and the cost is $25 to register online or $30 on event day. The race begins at 9 a.m. The first 200 participants will receive a free event T-shirt.

COOPERATIVE EXTENSION OFFERS JUNIOR GARDENING CLASSES

The University of Nevada Cooperative Extension’s Junior Master Gardener program is set to begin in September. Children ages 7 to 12 can experience hands-on gardening activities while learning about plants, water, soil, veggies and more.

The 4-H program is an eight-session-per-semester class with a fee of $52. Classes are planned from 9 a.m. to noon every other Saturday. For the north part of the valley, classes are planned at the Research Center & Demonstration Orchard, 4600 Horse Drive, and have begun. In the south part of the valley, classes are planned at the Lifelong Learning Center’s Outdoor Education Center, 8050 Paradise Road, beginning Sept. 13.

GOLF FOR GOODWILL EVENT PLANNED

Veterans event Golf for Goodwill Southern Nevada is planned Sept. 12 at the Rio Secco Golf Club, 2851 Grand Hills Drive. Registration is set for 10:30 a.m. with the shotgun start planned at noon. RAINBOW SOCCER LEAGUE SIGN-UPS AVAILABLE

Rainbow Youth Soccer League sign-ups are planned from 6 to 7:30 p.m. through Sept. 13 at the Desert Breeze Soccer Complex snack bar, 8275 Spring Mountain Road. The league is coed youth soccer for ages 2 to 18. The cost is $120, and sign-ups require a copy of birth certificate and wallet size photo. VIVA BIKE VEGAS PLANNED TO BENEFIT LOCAL ORGANIZATIONS

The seventh annual Viva Bike Vegas is planned for Sept. 13. After this year, the event is set to be called El Tour de Vegas. Participants can ride 25, 50 or 100 miles or participate in the Fun Ride of a quarter-mile, 5 or 10 miles.

The start time for all rides is 6 a.m., except for the Fun Ride, which is set for 8 a.m. A one-day bicycle expo and packet pickup is planned from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sept. 12 at The Linq, 3545 Las Vegas Blvd. South.

Viva Bike Vegas benefits Discovery Children’s Museum among other local organizations. All cyclists riding for Discovery Children’s Museum can receive a family four-pack of museum passes as a benefit of their support. The deadline to register to ride for Discovery Children’s Museum was Aug. 29. After Aug. 29, there is a late fee of $50.

ONE-DAY BASKETBALL CAMP PLANNED FOR YOUTHS

The Jewish Community Center of Southern Nevada has partnered with the Tarkanian Basketball Academy to announce the Ultimate 1-Day Basketball Camp for grades 2 through 12, set from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 14 at Tarkanian Basketball Academy, 2730 S. Rancho Drive.

The program includes age-appropriate skill development and advanced fundamentals followed by full-court games with an emphasis on shooting, passing/catching, rebounding, ball handling, footwork and offense/defense strategies. Each participate receives a reversible team jersey, official camp water bottle, framed group photo, official camp shirt and more. A kosher lunch and Gatorade is provided as well as MVP trophies for a selected few.

PEDAL TO THE MEDAL EVENT SCHEDULED

The Special Olympics Nevada Pedal to the Medal is planned to start at 6:30 a.m. Sept. 27 at the West Career & Technical Academy, 11945 W. Charleston Blvd.

Bike routes and registration fees offered include: 25-mile ride, $40; 50-mile ride with optional hill climb, $50; and a 100-mile century ride with optional hill climb, $65.

Registration includes ride, rest-stop support, lunch, a commemorative T-shirt and swag bag. In order to guarantee a T-shirt and swag bag, registration must be done by Aug. 29.

HEMOPHILIA FOUNDATION PLANNING WALK

The Nevada Chapter of the National Hemophilia Foundation is planning to host a Hemophilia Walk on Sept. 27. FENCING CAMPS PLANNED BY RED ROCK FENCING CENTER

Introduction to Fencing Camps for ages 5 to 9 and 9 to 15 are planned from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Red Rock Fencing Center, 8352 W. Warm Springs Road.

Participants will learn sportsmanship, the art and skill of fencing and have fun in the process. Fencing teaches focus, determination, coordination and thinking skills. Participants should bring lunch, but equipment will be supplied.

Camp fees are $200 per week, with an early drop-off fee of $20 per day from 7:30 to 9:15 a.m. The camp offers a 20 percent discount for siblings.

MASTER GARDENERS PLAN MONTHLY TOURS

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners plan free, monthly guided tours at the Lifelong Learning Center, 8050 Paradise Road.

The Demonstration Gardens contain more than 500 species of desert-appropriate landscape plants, including trees, shrubs, perennials, palms, cacti and agaves. Plants are identified by botanical and common names. The grounds are open for self-guided walks from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.

To join the monthly tour, meet in the courtyard by 10 a.m. on the specified date. Walking shoes, water, hats and other appropriate items are suggested. Groups of five or more people are asked to call program coordinator Ann Edmunds at 702-257-5587 at least two weeks in advance.

CENTENNIAL HILLS ACTIVE ADULT CENTER OFFERS WEEKLY SENIOR FITNESS CLASSES

The Centennial Hills Active Adult Center plans to offer 25 weekly fitness classes for adults 50 or older from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesdays at 6601 N. Buffalo Drive.

The National Park Service is offering opportunities in 2014 to enjoy national parks without paying an entrance fee.

The dates are Sept. 27, National Public Lands Day; and Nov. 11, Veterans Day weekend.
