Desert Research Institute puts out welcome mat for public
The Desert Research Institute will open its doors tonight for a rare — and free — look inside some of its Las Vegas labs.
The open house, Science LIVE!, is planned from 6 to 8 p.m. at 755 E. Flamingo Road, next to the National Atomic Testing Museum and west of Swenson Street.
The event is being held in support of the annual Las Vegas Science and Technology Festival.
DRI is the research arm of the Nevada System of Higher Education, conducting applied research across Nevada, the United States and on every continent. Its office in Las Vegas includes labs dedicated to archaeology, soil science, microbiology and the study of invasive quagga mussels that have taken hold in Lake Mead and elsewhere.
DRI scientists and faculty will be on hand to give presentations and answer questions about recent research on solar power technology, unmanned aerial drone systems and more. There also will be hands-on science activities for kids.
Tickets are needed for the lab tours, which are limited to 30 people at a time. Tour tickets will be available starting at 5:45 p.m. Food trucks will be on site starting at 5:30 pm.
The neighboring National Atomic Testing Museum will be presenting a hands-on Geiger counter activity that will demonstrate how the device measures radiation as well as offering half-price general admission coupons to its permanent exhibits.
