ICAN LEADERSHIP CAMP SET FOR AUG. 11-15 AT CAMP LEE CANYON

Applications are being accepted for the ninth annual Leadership Camp hosted by Issues Concerning Adolescents of Nevada (I.C.A.N.). The camp is for ages 11 to 17 and is scheduled for Aug. 11-15 at Camp Lee Canyon, 45 miles northwest of the Las Vegas Valley in the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest.

The five-day sleep-away camp will consist of speakers, workshops and curriculum to educate and empower young adults to be self-reliant, inspirational peer and community role models.

The camp application and tuition deadline is July 15. The cost is $275 per child, which includes food, lodging, workshops, speakers, a T-shirt, materials and activities, including a dance, campfires and a talent show.

Transportation to and from camp will be available from a park-and-ride location to be announced closer to camp time.

I.C.A.N. is a nonprofit charged with addressing the challenges facing today’s youths. The group’s adult leaders have decades of experience in drug and alcohol abuse prevention along with other obstacles that hinder teens’ abilities to make well-informed decisions. Many of the adults were once teens in similar programs. The group’s annual Leadership Camp provides a curriculum that teaches smart life choices through leadership training.

THREE GAMING INDUSTRY GIFTS NET $7.5 MILLION FOR UNLV HOSPITALITY HALL

MGM Resorts International, Boyd Gaming and Station Casinos committed to founder-level gifts of $2.5 million toward the construction of Hospitality Hall, a new academic building for UNLV’s Harrah Hotel College.

“The significance of these gifts for the college and for the overall success of the project cannot be overstated,” said Stowe Shoemaker, dean of the Harrah Hotel College. “The support of industry giants like MGM, Boyd and Station Casinos represents a huge investment in our students and our future standing in the hospitality arena.”

Hospitality Hall will feature views of the Strip and will serve as a bridge to the hospitality and gaming industry. With more than 93,000 square feet of classroom, laboratory and meeting space, the design will encourage interaction and a sense of community among students, faculty and industry professionals. It will be located on the UNLV campus, west of Beam Hall, which the college currently shares with the Lee Business School.

Founders’ names will be featured in specific areas/facilities within the building. Designed as a learning center showcasing all facets of the hospitality industry, Hospitality Hall will also include a student-run cafe, a state-of-the-art teaching kitchen, an interactive digital classroom and an outdoor plaza.

The Nevada Legislature approved $24.4 million for construction of Hospitality Hall in the recently completed 2015 Legislative Session. Remaining funding for the $56 million project will come from UNLV.

Nearly $16 million has been raised from gaming industry partners. Fundraising will continue, with a groundbreaking anticipated by the end of 2015.

SPARK! POETRY WRITING & RECITATION COMPETITION TAKING ENTRIES

Clark County high school students are invited to submit original poems for the Vegas Valley Book Festival’s Spark! Poetry Writing & Recitation Competition. Modeled after the national Poetry Out Loud competition and the Scholastic Writing competition, the contest will have students reciting their poetry during the book festival scheduled for Oct. 17.

The first-place prize is $300, second place is $200 and third place is $100.
