1 person shot in front of Tropicana after megafight

For all of the excitement inside the MGM Grand for Floyd Mayweather’s win by unanimous decision over Manny Pacquiao on Saturday night, there was, perhaps surprisingly, noticeable peace and civility outside — until an early morning shooting.

Las Vegas police reported “no significant events” besides heavy car and pedestrian traffic from the end of the fight about 9:50 p.m. to midnight.

But about 12:30 a.m., Metro’s Gang Unit responded to a shooting in front of the Tropicana, across the street from the MGM Grand, police said.

One person was taken to University Medical Center in connection with the shooting, police said. Police believe the incident was isolated and the shooter was still at-large as of 1:09 a.m.

Most traffic delays came outside of the arena on Las Vegas Boulevard, police said, and eastbound lanes on Tropicana Avenue from Interstate 15, according to a Metro release.

No post-fight incidents were reported from inside MGM, according to police.

Post-fight violence is nothing new to Las Vegas.

After a Mayweather-Marcos Maidana fight last May, 60 people were injured in a crowd stampede that involved a falling partition in the MGM Grand food court, making a noise that sounded like a gunshot. When the two fought again in September a man was injured in a small fight outside of the arena.

In perhaps the city’s largest sporting event before Saturday’s fight — the 2007 NBA All-Star game — about 400 people were arrested and at least four shootings were attributed to fans.
