2 die in domestic violence confrontation
August 11, 2014 - 8:37 pm
Two people died Monday after a domestic violence confrontation and a home invasion, according to Las Vegas police.
Metro supervisor Lt. Dave Valenta said the situation, possibly stemming from a custody disagreement, occurred about 5 p.m.
A man was lying in wait as a woman drove along the 4900 block of Ocean Shores Way, near Jones Boulevard and Lone Mountain Road. He rammed her car with his pickup truck, police said. He then broke out her window and stabbed her about 13 times, Valenta said.
The woman, in her 30s, was sent to University Medical Center where she later died.
Valenta said the man escaped to North Las Vegas and, armed with a knife, forced his way into a home located in the 4600 block of Candlas Way, near Decatur Boulevard and Lone Mountain Road. Police say the man, about 40 years old, used his truck to ram the house before entering it.
The man fought with the homeowner, who shot the intruder multiple times, Metro Lt. Ray Steiber said Monday night.
“There’s definitely some anger involved,” Steiber said.
After being shot by the homeowner, the intruder then turned the knife on himself, Valenta said. He died at the scene. As far as police could tell, no one else was in the home at the time of the shooting.
Metro and North Las Vegas police later said they were still investigating and as of 9 p.m., couldn’t confirm whether the man died of gunshot wounds or self-inflicted knife wounds. A cause of death has not yet been determined.
Police couldn’t confirm whether the two men knew each other.
North Las Vegas police spokesman Aaron Patty said his agency is covering the home invasion crime, and Metro was covering the domestic violence killing.
This was the 80th homicide so far this year in the Metropolitan Police Department’s jurisdiction.
