3 children struck by car near Las Vegas school

Three children were hospitalized Wednesday morning with minor injuries after they were hit by a car near a Las Vegas elementary school, according to Metro police.

Officers responded about 7:15 a.m. to the crash near Halle Hewetson Elementary School, 701 N. 20th St., near North Eastern Avenue and East Bonanza Road, according to the Metro’s traffic site.

The children were taken to University Medical Center with injuries that were not life-threatening, according to Metro spokesman Lt. Tadd Dodds.

The driver stayed at the scene and police do not suspect that drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash, according to Metro spokeswoman Officer Laura Meltzer. Early investigations indicate that the children, who were related, were at fault, she said.

Meltzer said this is a good time to remind drivers, parents and caregivers of pedestrian students to drop their kids off at crosswalks so that tragedies can be avoided during the holiday.
