Clark County coroner calls 4-month-old’s death a homicide

The Clark County coroner ruled the December death of a baby boy as a homicide.

Devonta Lewis Jr., 4 months old, was pronounced dead on Dec. 10. He died from multiple blunt-force injuries, according to the coroner.

County firefighters told Las Vegas police about the medical call at 12:24 a.m. Dec. 10 at a residence in the 5100 block of East Sahara Avenue, near Nellis Boulevard, according to police.

Lewis was taken to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he died at 12:34 a.m., police said.

The child’s father, 22-year-old Devonta Lewis, was arrested on Jan. 15 on charges of first degree murder and child abuse. During his preliminary hearing on Feb. 18 his bail was set at $300,000 and the judge barred him from unsupervised contact with his other child.

That child, a 1-year-old girl, was taken by Child Protective Services, but the agency could not say if the child was still in protective custody or had been returned to her mother.

Metro spokesman officer Larry Hadfield said the investigation is ongoing, but he did not comment on whether the child’s mother was under suspicion as well.
