A 39-year-old North Las Vegas woman who pleaded guilty to felony child abuse for keeping a filthy home where eight children lived was ordered to serve four years probation Wednesday.
Her former live-in boyfriend was ordered to serve three years probation on the same charge.
Geneva Morgan and Donald Hemming Jr.’s 3-month-old son, Donald Hemmings III, died Jan. 20, while the two were jailed on eight felony charges of child abuse, neglect or endangerment.
They pleaded guilty earlier this year to one charge, which names all eight victims, while the other counts were dismissed.
The 3-month-old boy had been found by police covered in vomit and living in conditions deemed “an extreme environmental hazard,” according to a Dec. 20 North Las Vegas police report. The discovery was made while officers were serving a search warrant in a robbery investigation.
At the time of the couple’s arrests, the eight children — ages 3 months to 17 years old — in the blended family were taken into protective custody.
The infant suffered from sudden infant death syndrome, according to Morgan’s lawyer, Dewayne Nobles.
District Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez ordered Morgan to undergo parenting classes, substance abuse and mental health treatment, as well as stay in compliance with child protective services.
