Cyclist killed in RTC bus crash; driver suspected of DUI, police say

A bicyclist was killed and a bus driver was arrested on suspicion of DUI following a southwest Las Vegas crash Friday afternoon.

The Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada employee was jailed on one felony count of DUI and other traffic-related misdemeanors, according to the Metropolitan Police Department and court records.

Police identified the driver as Johnelle Johnson, 46, who is scheduled to appear in Las Vegas Justice Court Saturday afternoon.

The crash occurred shortly before 3 p.m. at the intersection on East Tropicana Avenue and South Nellis Boulevard.

Johnson was heading eastbound when she ran a red light and hit the cyclist who was crossing the street, police said.

The 33-year-old man, who was on a BMX-style bike, died at Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, police said.

The Clark County coroner’s office will release his name after his family is notified.

This was the 133th traffic fatality in Metro’s jurisdiction this year.

The RTC did not return a request for comment Friday.
