Dog, bird killed in apartment fire near downtown Las Vegas

A dog and a “large” bird died in an apartment fire near downtown Las Vegas on Wednesday, according to the city fire department.

No people were hurt.

Multiple callers reported seeing a column of smoke about 10 a.m. near the apartment building at 405 N. 15th St., the agency said.

The fire started in a kitchen of a four-plex apartment building, the department said. Firefighters were able to contain the fire to one unit. The blaze was extinguished about 10:30 a.m.

No one was home when the fire started, but the fire department said the person who lived in the apartment told them that the power had been shut off.

Six people were displaced and the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada is assisting. The cost of damage is estimated at $65,000.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
