LAS VEGAS NAMED BICYCLE-FRIENDLY COMMUNITY

The League Of American Bicyclists named the city of Las Vegas a Bicycle Friendly Community and gave the city a bronze award for its efforts to make itself more bicycle accessible and convenient for the community. Last year, the city of Las Vegas increased its bicycle network by more than 23 percent to 444 miles of bike lanes and 102 miles of paved off-road trails. The city also created a bicycle parking partnership program for the installation of bike parking downtown, which has resulted in the donation of 10 public racks for local businesses. The city previously purchased and installed 27 racks. The city also established the Las Vegas Bicycle Coalition, an independent advocacy group intended to connect the community through cycling and advocated for state legislation to improve safety for cyclists.

NEON MUSEUM LAUNCHES CONSERVATION CAMPAIGN

The Neon Museum, 770 Las Vegas Blvd. North, launched an online fundraising campaign to repaint the Desert Rose Motel sign.

The Desert Rose Motel opened at 4000 Las Vegas Blvd. South in 1953. According to a museum press release, the Neon Museum’s Desert Rose Motel sign, a pole-mounted, roadside sign designed by the Young Electric Sign Company, was installed in front of the property in 1960. It remained operational until the motel’s demolition in 1995.

Th museum chose the Desert Rose Motel sign as the focus of this repainting campaign because it is visually appealing day or night, independent of neon electrification. The museum is hoping to raise $50,000, which is part of a larger initiative to conserve and stabilize signs that have been compromised by time and the elements.

For more information or to make a donation, visit neonmuseum.org or call 702-387-6366.
