Literary Las Vegas: Nachman Kataczinsky

How different would Nazi Germany’s rise have been if contemporary Israel’s military power had been there in 1941 to put an end to it? Las Vegas author Nachman Kataczinsky explores the possibilities in the time travel, science fiction, alternative history novel “The Shield.” Kataczinsky was born in the Soviet Union to Holocaust survivors. His family eventually relocated to Poland and then to Israel, where he served as an infantry officer with the Israel Defense Forces. He moved to the United States in 1987 and set up a research and development company. For more information, visit theshield.rankarmor.com.

Excerpt:

The telephone was ringing. The red phone. He looked at his bedside clock — three in the morning. Who was calling at this ungodly hour? These days he slept much better and was not as stressed out as he had been only a year ago. The coalition was stable and, except for the usual political squabbling and maneuvering, everything was quiet. It was his third year as Prime Minister and he no longer had to anticipate a nuclear war. Now if it happened they had The Shield.

“Yes, Amos speaking.”

“Mr. Prime Minister,” said Gad Yaari, “the shield has been activated. I already told the Defense Minister.”
