GARDENING CLASSES PLANNED

Clark County Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Helen Brown is slated to present two gardening classes in April. Growing Cucumbers and Squash is planned for 9 a.m. April 20 at the Master Gardener Orchard, 4600 Horse Road, North Las Vegas. A $5 donation is requested.

Planting Vine Crops is set for 10 a.m. April 23 at the Family Resource Center at University Medical Center, 1120 Shadow Lane.

Both classes are open to the public; however, participants must preregister by contacting Amy Runge at 702-383-2229.

The city of Las Vegas invites parents to enroll children in summer day camp programs at six area community centers. Open registration is set to begin Thursday at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive. Open registration for camps at the remaining five centers begins at 8 a.m. Saturday.

Online registration and telephone registration will not be available for summer camps. Registration must be done in person.

Registration closes when the programs are full. All locations will have limited enrollment. Contact each location for details.

Summer camps are scheduled for 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning June 10. There will be no camp July 4.

Summer camps will promote fun, fitness, adventure and education in a safe and friendly atmosphere. Age-appropriate activities, including field trips, sports, special events, physical fitness and games, arts and crafts and nutrition training are planned under the supervision of trained staff members.

Preferred walk-in registration for those who were enrolled in the 2012 camps at the Mirabelli Community Center is set for 5 p.m. Thursday at Mirabelli, 6200 Hargrove Ave.

Numbered registration packets for camps at the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center will be distributed at 8 a.m. Thursday at the center; registrations are slated to begin at 5 p.m. that evening at the center.

The following four locations will offer summer camps, priced at $75 per child for the week and $70 for additional children in the family:

-- Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road, 702-229-1607. Ages 6 to 11. Camp ends Aug. 23.

-- Doolittle Community Center, 1950 N. J St., 702-229-6374. Ages 6 to 15. Camp ends Aug. 16.

-- East Las Vegas Community Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave., 702-229-1515. Ages 6 to 15. Camp ends Aug. 16.

-- Stupak Community Center, 251 W. Boston Ave., 702-229-2488. Ages 6 to 15. Camp ends Aug. 16.

Two community centers plan to offer themed weeklong specialty camps with additional activities, cooking and/or field trips. The cost will be $115 per child for the week and $110 for additional children, for most camps. A few specialty camps have higher prices. A separate Lorenzi Adaptive summer program for youths 7 to 22 with disabilities is slated to be offered from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 10-Aug. 16, only at the East Las Vegas Community Center. Participants will enjoy a new recreation experience every week, community outings, sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming and movies. The cost is $75 per child for the week and $70 for each additional child in the family. Registration for this program is set to open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. SHRINERS GOLF TOURNAMENT PLANNED FOR OCTOBER AT TPC SUMMERLIN

The 2013 Shriners Hospitals for Children Open golf tournament is planned for Oct. 14-20 at TPC Summerlin, 1700 Village Center Circle. The Shriners Hospitals for Children Open is an official PGA Tour event. The 2013 tournament is set to feature more than 130 PGA Tour professionals competing for a $6 million purse, with a winner’s share of $1,080,000. All proceeds will benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children.

The events fourth annual Women’s Day luncheon, Kick Off Your Heels, is planned for Oct. 15. It will be catered and feature a guest speaker. Tickets are $125 per guest. The luncheon sold out in 2012, so early purchases are encouraged.

HUMANA GUIDANCE CENTERS SPONSOR WALKING GROUPS

Humana Guidance Centers are offering free walking groups led by a certified personal trainer. The program aims to positively impact seniors’ health by motivating and engaging them to take action and improve their fitness level and mental outlook by learning the proper walking and stretching techniques.

Participants will receive a free pedometer and at the end of each outing can upload their steps at a Guidance Center computer kiosk or at home to tracks steps taken, distance and calories burned.

TEAM IN TRAINING BEGINS FOR THE LEUKEMIA & LYMPHOMA SOCIETY

The Southern Nevada office of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society announces its 2013 season of Team In Training, which teaches participants to complete half and full marathons while raising money and community awareness about blood cancers.

More than 50 participants are committing to run the Nike Women’s Marathon Half on April 28 in Washington, D.C., or the Rock ‘n’ Roll San Diego Marathon & Half Marathon June 2.

Participants hope to raise, on average, $3,000 each to support the organization and run in the races dedicated to LLS.

LEISURE CONNECTION SOCIAL GROUP OUTINGS PLANNED EACH MONTH

Leisure Connection for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is a social group planned each month. The outings are geared to assist high-functioning adults with social skills and independence in the community. Activities include bowling, movies, lunch/dinner, sports events and leisure education classes. REGISTRATION BEGINS FOR SPORTS AND RECREATION PROGRAMS

The North Las Vegas Recreation Division’s Activity Schedule of classes, sports and recreation programs is available.

Registration can be conducted online at cityofnorthlasvegas.com or in person at the Silver Mesa Recreation Center, 4025 Allen Lane, and the Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St. A list of offerings is available on the website.

The city’s recreation division offers a variety of affordable activities for adults and children, including personal training at the gym, adult and child dance classes, gymnastics, ceramics and martial arts.

Each of the programs encourages healthy exercise and social activities.

NEW A.G.E. EVENTS FOR THOSE WITH DISABILITIES PLANNED

New A.G.E. for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is set from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive. The program offers a variety of activities and special events that promote individuality, self-esteem and independence. The cost is $21 for one to three days, $28 for four days and $35 for five days each week.

ADAPTIVE RECREATION PROGRAM PLANNED FOR THOSE 7 TO 21

The Lorenzi Adaptive Recreation Program for those ages 7 to 21 with disabilities is set from 1 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. Participants can enjoy a new recreation experience every week, community outings, sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming and movies. The cost is $27 for one to three days, $36 for four days and $45 for five days, per person.

WHEELCHAIR ACTIVITIES OFFERED AT FREMONT MIDDLE SCHOOL

Wheelchair athletes open gym and wheelchair basketball practice for those ages 14 to adult is available from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at Fremont Middle School, 1100 E. QUAD RUGBY PRACTICE OFFERED WEEKLY

GOLF TOURNAMENT PLANNED APRIL 30 AT EAGLE CREST

A Mad Hatter Golf Tournament is planned from 6 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. April 30 at Sun City Summerlin Eagle Crest golf course. The fee is $75 per person for Sun City residents and includes greens fees, cart, prizes, continental breakfast, free Bloody Mary bar and lunch after golf at the Summit haberdashery. YOGA CLASS FOR ALL FITNESS LEVELS SLATED AT SAHARA WEST LIBRARY

Free seated yoga stretch classes with Carol Dickman of stretch.com are scheduled for 2 p.m. the second Friday of the month at the Sahara West Library, 9600 W. Sahara Ave., and the third Friday of the month at the Rainbow Library, 3150 N. Buffalo Drive.

The seated yoga sessions are free and open to the public. They are suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

SUMMERLIN HALF MARATHON COMING SATURDAY

The third annual Summerlin Half Marathon is planned for 7 a.m. Saturday at the JW Marriott, 221 N. Rampart Blvd. The 13.1-mile course is set to meander through seven Summerlin villages on the community’s trail system.

GIRLS ON THE RUN OF LAS VEGAS SEEKS TEAM MEMBERS

Girls on the Run of Las Vegas is looking to start a team of girls in third through fifth grade in northwest Las Vegas and Summerlin. The group forwards a youth development program, where girls meet twice a week for discussions regarding empowerment, self-confidence and healthy living. The group incorporates stretching, games and running during that time. At the end of the 12-week program, the entire Las Vegas chapter gets together for a 5K race.
