Driver faces DUI, assault charges after cop nearly rammed

A driver tried to ram a Metro officer on Wednesday and was booked on a charge of assault with a deadly weapon, according to police.

Police identified him as Alexander Martinez.

Just before 6 a.m., the driver of a vehicle “attempted to hit one of the officers” near Durango Drive and Summerlin Parkway, Metro spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said.

Martinez took off in the car, then crashed into a wall at Charles Turk Drive and Stapleton Avenue, near Westcliff Drive and Cimarron Road, causing the car to catch fire about 6:30 a.m.

Then Martinez tried to run away, but police said they caught him.

No officers were injured, Meltzer said.

A passenger in the vehicle police said Martinez driving was taken to MountainView Hospital. That person’s condition and identity were not available.
