Fire in sofa damages vacant house on East Oakey

Las Vegas firefighters responded Thursday morning to multiple reports of a fire at a vacant house near East Oakey Boulevard and Las Vegas Boulevard South.

Crews arrived at 556 E. Oakey Blvd. about 8:30 a.m. to find the fire in the backyard, against the house. They had the flames extinguished in five minutes.

Firefighters found two homeless adults sleeping in the back bedroom, according to Las Vegas Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski.

After the man and woman were awoken by firefighters, they were able to walk out of the house uninjured. There was light smoke within the home and the two occupants were taken to University Medical Center to be checked and treated for minor smoke inhalation.

The fire started on a sofa on the back patio of the house. Damages were estimated at $10,000. The cause of the fire is undetermined.
