Man dead after fatal crash behind Cosmopolitan

A 61-year-old man died after a fatal crash Friday afternoon about a block west of The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas.

Officers were called at 4:18 p.m. to the wreck, which happened near the intersection of Naples Drive and Polaris Avenue, just south of Harmon Avenue, Metro Lt. Ken Romane said.

Witness statements show the man's 2000 Chrysler Town & Country was headed south on Polaris toward Naples when, for unknown reasons, he veered to the right, hopped the sidewalk and hit a light pole and fence.

He came to a stop with both back tires in the road. A witness ran up to the van and noticed the "driver was experiencing some sort of medical distress," a release said.

The West Hills, Calif., man was transported to Spring Valley Hospital Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

The coroner's office will name him once his family has been notified.
